If criminals were smart they would realize they could make more money working then robbing people. On the other hand home invaders are well aware they can be shot. An armed homeowner at night isn't going to try and detain him. In a state like California they know the odds are with them. Not this time.

Many houses are broken into in the morning. There was a string of them in my town. He would do it 5-6am just before people got up for work. He always broke into the houses when people were home.
