Nashville, Tennessee, April 18 (Reuters) - Chinese government-linked hackers have burrowed into U.S. critical infrastructure and are waiting "for just the right moment to deal a devastating blow," FBI Director Christopher Wray said on Thursday.
An ongoing Chinese hacking campaign known as Volt Typhoon has successfully gained access to numerous American companies in telecommunications, energy, water and other critical sectors, with 23 pipeline operators targeted, Wray said in a speech at Vanderbilt University.
Wray said China's hackers operated a series of botnets - constellations of compromised personal computers and servers around the globe - to conceal their malicious cyber activities

Normally ransomware holds the data hostage.

In that case I think it would be more like extortionware, where they threaten to make things public.

I have said it again and again. Why is anything critical not airgapped? They keep claiming remote access, but from who or why? You can certainly have your operators remotely monitoring/controlling your equipment on your own network, no internet involved. Fiber is everywhere, companies will gladly sell you a point to point network for long distances.
