Unfortunately unthreaded AR9 barrels are a kind of unicorn. I think it would be worth while to contact the companies that make AR9 barrels to see if they would pin and weld for you. Palmetto seems like a place that might do that for you but I don't know. You'd have to call and ask.

Oh yeah, definitely a stalking horned horse of a product to find. That Taccom is interesting but what I kinda want a full length barrel (though still hopefully doesn't weigh a ton). Ever see say a 14.5", even if threaded? I have a spare (long) northern gun parts fake flash suppressor that would make a nice legal length "thread protector", if I have to go the pin/weld route.

no nothing of PSA .. but have seen ads for barrels/uppers that are already pin'd and welded .. Palmetto State Armory

8+/- weeks on an AR barrel. I would say to call them, because while they have 9mm as a caliber to select, they don't have a selection for no gas port. It makes you choose pistol,carbine, mid or rifle. It also makes you pick a size for a gas block.

It makes you pick as some hand guards are held on by the gas block /gas block shoulder.

“Custom” barrels are easy to find and most dont take that long.

In the notes section you can put not to drill the gas port. You can also choose a custom gas block length of 0.0 inches

At the risk of opening this can of worms- the northern gun parts fake flash suppressor I have is threaded for the wacky 9mm threads. Are we generally comfortable with JBWeld as "permanent enough"? Somewhat going range toy on this one so not looking to sink a ton of money into it if I can help it.

i have that fake muzzle break and i just used the red loctite on mine:idk:

I’d be comfortable with JB Weld. It’s effectively permanent. Not sure how you would be able to undo it. No gas block with a AR9 so you don’t have to worry about removing it at a later date.

I mean, according to the ATF silver solder or pinning and welding are the only way it's considered permanent. That determination was, I believe, in regard to having a 14" bbl and using a flash hider or brake to extend the bbl to the legal length of 16". So in the sense of increasing bbl length it makes sense to have it pinned and welded to be a permanent part of the bbl. However I do believe the letter also mentioned caps and thread protectors...idk.
The ATF doesn't care that you have threads, it's NYS that hates them. I guess NY defaults to the ATF determination....but with JB weld, the muzzle device isn't coming off, threads are donezo.....I have no idea how that LEO interaction would turn out or what a prosecutor or a jury would determine.

I guess the deal would be anyway- it isn't a muzzle device and it's pretty obvious it isn't one, and generally i only shoot at my house (well not AT my house) anyway...

I was under the impression that JB Weld might be removable with heat. Anything past 600?
I'm looking at the heat block putty for the barrel and a syringe of the 1100 degree silver solder for a project.

So, stupid question- if I want to do the solder routine what do I need? I would imagine the soldering gun in my wood burning kit is probably not the tool for the job, or is it really that simple?

Most two part epoxies soften up with heat, I don't know how warm a 9mm barrel will get using 10rnd mags , but sure would suck to have it fall just before a LEO walks by! I believe JB has a Hi-temp stuff, I know others do.

Edit; I guess I should've read ALL the post before replying. oh well

Ahh. What’s the point? People will do whatever they wish despite what the ATF says due to laziness. I posted their determination letter about the issue online in the past. Me... If it’ll take an extra 2 weeks to ship out and 50 bucks to do it right so that if it’s ever used and taken as evidence, I’ll do it. I’m not hard up on 50 bucks and 2 weeks to ship it out to get done to make sure that it’s done right.

I used Murray’s Gunsmithing in Texas.

The reason why I used them all the way out in Texas to pin a cap on a 9mm barrel was because I used them in the past for some SKS work (they specialize in SKS work) and I liked their customer service. I learned about them on the SKS Boards and used them like 3 times previously. One was for trigger work on an SKS and the other was to put threads on a barrel to accommodate a flash suppressor on an SKS. Another time I sent it out to do a job on the chamber because I was getting a lot of popped primers. Each time I got the gun back I was satisfied.

Good idea. Didn't even think about it. It's been a while since I used them but I've had good luck with Adco.
