Lol. I’m not surprised. Build a wall, you go around it or tunnel under it.

I’ve wondered for a while why, if tensions on this issue run so high, we haven’t quit running towards extremes. OK, have a wall, and standards. But maybe also not create a black market incentive for going around the law (and the wall) by thinking in market terms by introducing supply. Supply legal entry, reduce demand for the illegal entry which happens either way. Get folks documented, legal, medically verified, and accounted for. Once made legal, there’s more possibility for collecting taxes, and if they’ve gone through a formal process, less chance of voter fraud. On the other end, put some restrictions on entitlements. Less illegals, more legals, minimize cost, take away another revenue stream for cartels, also treats humans more like humans than problems. Market solutions. Market solutions!

I agree to some parts, but as a whole disagree. I am actually smiling at the fact that someone other than me sees market solutions as a viable alternative to solve government intervention and legislation, but I also don't think it applies to all scenarios. EX- the removal of many restrictions on guns would reduce illegal gun importation to cities with high gun regulations thus reducing ( not eliminating) the market for guns. I also don't think it applies in all scenarios EX- illegal drugs. Creating a legal economy for this would have far worse ramifications, albeit the current approach is also a failure. I think it would need to be applied on a case by case basis. Whether this would work with immigration reform and its long term ramifications would be difficult to predict.

We have a system limiting illegal immigration - it’s called legal immigration. All the free perks the progressive left has given to illegals has created the perverse incentives that illegals from all over the world will do just about anything to come here through Mexico. Sanctuary cities, free benefits and healthcare, driver’s licenses, penalties based on your ability to pay (coming to NY), drop an anchor baby and you can stay, etc.

Putting restrictions on the perks will not change things as living in the USA still a better deal than they have elsewhere. As a start you need to eliminate all the bonus incentives and be able to know who is coming in. You can’t do that with open borders.

Regarding a wall causing tunnels and not stopping the flow...

Here's the thing. Walls work. Traffic now has to be funneled into tunnels. However, not everyone can use that tunnel. Only the owners of that tunnel and those that pay to use that tunnel can use it. It will be kept secret from the general public so as to not have it shut down. So all those that walked across the border on their own without the help of the cartels, now are severely hampered since they do not have access to the tunnel unless they pay the cartels.

There is a supply of legal entry.

Many use it.

I would argue that the supply is too small, but it is artificially restricted to compensate for the illegal numbers.

The wall and other less physical barriers serve to increase the cost of illegal entry. They obviously can't prevent it, but they can shift the economics of it.

The goal is to adjust the supply of legal entry and the cost of illegal entry to reduce the latter.

Even if all the wall does is increase the cost to the coyotes by $20/head it will reduce illegal entry significantly.
