I'm guessing this isn't your first gloryhole.I am gonna guess there are threads inside the cap (female threads) and the end of the barrel has threads in the outside (male threads).
By truned the cap clockwise onto the barrel the cap will screw onto the barrel.
It is a very common attachment system that is used on thousands of applications.

I'm curious as well.You knew where I was going. I'm curious about the gunsmith's opinion that did the work. I know what I would do and I think I know what you would do. My question to the OP stands.
