Firearms of the Son on AMC

I don't know how many of you have been watching the Son on AMC. It's a pretty interesting show so far starring Pierce Brosnan as Eli McCullough and is set in two time periods --- Eli in 1915 as the patriarch of a cattle ranching family in South Texas and Eli in 1849 as a teenager captured by the Comanche, an experience that shapes his adult life.

There are some interesting firearms used in the show. Last nights episode gave considerable exposure to the Lewis machine gun. But I think that bordered on being one of those "gun errors" we all seem to notice (to the exasperation of our wives). According to what I have read the Lewis came into being in 1915 and, as I've said, the "adult Eli" part is set in 1915 so I wonder how such a brand new weapon would find its way to a South Texas ranch so quickly.

Another gun that caught my eye - and I am looking for help in identifying - is a magazine fed semi-auto rifle. It looked to be a Winchester model 1910 but the magazine used in the show appeared to be much longer than what I have seen pictured online.

Did anyone else catch sight of this rifle and know what it it?

That Winchester was a popular firearm for LEOs at the time hence the larger magazine. It was also an inspiration for the M1 Carbine.

Evening All. Just binged watched the season to current and I am working on creating the IMFDB page for The Son. If any of you fellow watchers want to contribute I'd love the help. So far we have the 1907SL, Eli carries a 1911 ( i think, have to put it on the big screen and make sure it's not a 1903 hamerless), we have the 1894 his son is very proficient with, a broomhandle mauser it looks like (used by one of the defenders of the homestead in episode 5) and a few others I haven't narrowed down yet. What was the revolver Sally held during ep5? Almost looked like a Lemat from the brief shot, haven't rewatched the episode yet. Again, would really appreciate any input / corrections / additions. hello all I was the armorer on THE SON. The Lewis gun was Adopted buy Belgium in 1912 and the British soon after so its use in 1915 not a stretch. Eli's Pistol is a 1911 Colt 45 ACP, it is a true repo of a 1911 (Cimarron WILD BUNCH 1911) not a 1911 A1 which wasn't introduced till 1921 ..
The extended 351cal 1907 WIN SLR mags are 10 rounders. In eps 5 Sally holds Pete's 1st Model Hand Ejector in 44 spl. Neptune does in fact carry a C96 "Broomhandle" Mauser. The leader of the Sedicioso's carried a 6in Navy Luger .
We also had Krag 30-40 rifles and Carbines a couple of 1895 Winchesters 30-40(Texas Ranger favorite) and 03 Springfields, 87,97 W and model 12 Winchester pump shotguns.
Phineas carries a 1903 Colt Pocket model in a shoulder holster,380 cal. At the start of the Honey hunt he carries a Remington Model 8 in 35 rem with a period Lyman peep sight.
There are also several early model Colt Police Positive And S&W Hand Ejector 38 spl Double Action revolvers in the 1915 time line.
The Sheriff carried a Colt New Service 45 Colt. Pedro Garcia Carries a Nickel S&W Schofield revolver in 45 colt.

I'm now working on a Mini Series for National Geographic based on the book THE LONG ROAD HOME about Black Sunday April 4th 2004 in Sadr City when the Madi Army ambushed the 1st Cavalry Division. Lots of ARs, 240s, M2s, 249s, AKs, RPKs, PKMs, RPGs etc. Look for it end of the year or spring.

I went and looked in my "Gun Bible" for The Son and noticed I forgot a couple of weapons in the 1915 timeline.
Tom Sullivan carries a 5 1/2 in Colt Bisley in 38 Special. He's left handed for all of you out there in your right minds!
If you look at the gun rack in Eli's office you'll see an original 1873 45-70 Trapdoor Springfield Carbine and an original 1858 Endfield Cavalry Carbine ( Confederate blockade marked ) a Belgium made 12 ga sxs shotgun , and two cut down smooth bore percussion muskets one decorated with brass tacks and nails. On his bookshelf sits an 1858 Starr double action percussion 44 cal revolver. In Pedro Garcia's office you'll see two antique finished Colt 36 cal Navy revolvers, one first model one second model ( different trigger guards) .
In the Honey Hunt one well to do gentleman carries a 1899 Savage Lever action rifle in 250 3000 Savage ( caliber introduced in 1915 ) and one has a sporterized 1896 Spanish Mauser in 7x57 cal. There are also a couple of 1894 Whinchester 26 inch octogon barreled rifles one 30-30 one 38-55 and a 1895 rifle in 30-40 Krag.
Eli carries an Ithaca 12ga SxS hammerless shotgun at the start of the Honey hunt episode.
I'm not sure you'll see all of the long guns in the HoneyHunt some of them were in footage that might have been cut, but they were there on the day!

The Son 1849,
Young Eli hunts with a 54 cal. percussion Jaeger Rifle (Pedersoli). His brother has a 40 cal. flintlock Kentucky style rifle. The Comanche carry Charleville 69 cal smooth bore muskets, they did a lot of trading with the French (they loved playing the Spanish/Mexicans and the French against each others!) and many Anglo settlers had them so they got them from raiding, Brown Bess 3rd Model India pattern flintlock 75 cal. muskets which were used buy the Mexican Army and were mostly acquired by raiding and a couple of 50 cal percussion Hawkins rilles decorated with brass tacks, nails, leather and feathers. Toshaway carries a Colt's Texas Model Paterson 36 cal percussion revolver. Young Eli uses a Colt's 1st model Dragoon in the shootout with the Rangers.
The Texas Rangers carry a mix of 36cal Patersons (one with a loading lever), 44 cal Colt's Walker and 1st Dragoon percussion revolvers. Cut down Percussion 12 ga shotguns , a British 62cal Flintlock Paget Carbine , cut down Brown Bess Musket to carbine length, the English stuff would be US & Mexican war capture , many Rangers fought in that war, Model 1841 54 cal percussion "Mississippi" rifle and one 1849 Slant Breach Sharps on Bigfoot's saddle . I really wanted to have a US Hall's breech loading carbine (heavily used by the US Dragoons in the war)in the mix but couldn't find one to rent or afford to buy!
The dying Tonk had a British 62cal flintlock dragoon pistol.
The Buffalo Hunters Had a 62 cal patched round ball heavy octagon barreled percussion Hawkin style hunting gun, a 62 cal patched round ball Flintlock english style trade rifle for hunting. and a mix of Charleville, Brown Bess Muskets and carbines along with Paterson and Dragoon revolvers for self protection.
We had two dozen percussion revolvers on the show and four of them were cartridge conversions which we used in long shots to speed up reloading for the actors.
Well that's Season One! We got picked up for Season Two so we'll see whats new later this year.
