First Hunting Gun, For Youth

Got my first buck with it too. (7 point)

I do plan on throwing some target load in that for him to try some bigger bang than he's used to. I have some rifled slugs for it as well, but I'm hesitant to have him use this gun for it just because of the single bead sights. It'll be a challenge for him to aim it. BUT, it's not out of the question. I'll bet my dad would love for him to get a deer with it.

In doing some digging, the Mossberg 510 mini super bantam looks like a solid choice. I'm leaning shotgun because while we live in a rifle county, slugs are still an option. Couple that with the flexibility of the adjustable LOP, and the fact that it can accept 500 stocks (possibly 500 barrels as well), it seems like a good all around starter that can grow with him.

IMO I would work on marksmanship skills first. Perfecting trigger squeeze and using proper breathing technique is paramount. Being able to hit little targets at a distance is very rewarding. I would start with a decent quality .22 bolt rifle and buy lots food for it. Start at the bench and when he is regularly taking out the X - ring introduce him to 4 position shooting (prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing) Some clubs have a junior shooting program that he might like. This will all help towards making him a better hunter...

Sorry but I feel no hunting until he is proficient at hitting what he ia aiming at.

Both can happen at the same time. He has a year before he can hunt, hence looking to get him his own.

My 12 year old kid is around 85lbs and skinny. I got a Howa mini action for him to hunt with this year. It's light and has a good trigger on it.

I've got an old Mossberg single shot...perfect. In fact it was called the Boy Scout rifle. Young kid, adult, whatever, contemplation shot to shot. I've no idea what might be currently available, and decent priced. My two cents...something that can be passed down, make it memorable.

I ended up getting an email from sportsman warehouse about a sale they’re having. I ended up getting a Tristar Cobra III 20ga pump. It’s not top of the line by any stretch of the imagination, but it should get him going for a while.
