This is a look at the new 2.0 version of Smith&Wesson's 'Compact'; they've had a Compact out for a while - M&P®9c Compact | Smith & Wesson - but this is their new 2.0 version in a Glock 19-sized package. Here's a somewhat-quick look at it; I have NOT shot this gun yet, so these observations are just from handling and dry-firing.
In fact the 1.0 Compact was my second (or was it third, who can remember) pistol; it served me well at the range and in at least one training class with MDTS. Only issue I had was the grip was a little short causing me to pinch my pinky once or twice before changing my grip when reloading. I sold my 9c a year ago since I had picked up an M&P Shield 9mm; after selling the 9c I picked up a fullsize 2.0 (well, it was technically BEFORE selling it, but the sale was 'pending'). Of course a few months later they announced the newer 2.0 Compact (15 round capacity), which as stated above isn't the same size as 1.0 Compact (12 round capacity)...
I really liked the 2.0 fullsize, even though we are restricted to 10 rounds here in FUACNY.. I did find it a little big but as I said at the time they hadn't announced a smaller size. After the announcement of the 2.0 Compact I slapped myself and figured I'd pick one up after a while. I've been wanting to get into competition more, and decided to dedicate my fullsize M&P 2.0 to nightstand duty.
I've been seeing sales on the 2.0 Compact for weeks if not months (think it was announced in Fall 2017?).. I ordered mine from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore | Online Shopping for Firearms, Ammunition and Shooting Accessories for $399 (with two mags). Preorder price 4 months ago was $440, and lowest I've seen recently is $386. I also waited because the gun ships with 15 round magazines, and 10-round magazines are not yet available. (see below)
The website shipped promptly (my FFL pins mags to 10 rounds at $10/mag), and after an annoying trip to the pistol license office the other day I made my way to pickup the gun today. I had also purchased a set of AmeriGlo I-Dot sights and a full Apex Tactical flat-faced trigger kit to have installed.
Arriving at the gunshop and dry-firing the pistol I found the trigger to be immensely better than the stock 2.0 trigger in my fullsize; using a Wheeler Engineering trigger gauge on the full-size, I was getting readings ranging from 4 lbs 12 ounces to 5 lbs 9 ounces (avg of 5.1 lbs). This is a stock 2.0 trigger after an estimated 1500 rounds. It still has a little "grittiness", and I find it still not 'good enough' for my liking. (I've gotten spoiled by AR triggers)
The trigger in my new 2.0 Compact? From a low of 3 lbs 3 ounces to 4 pounds 1 ounce (average 3.6 lbs). It also has a little bit of "grittiness", and it seems to have a small hiccup (more of a 'burr' feeling) before hitting the wall, and then a decent break. I don't have any other similar pistols to compare it to (eg, PPQ, Glock19, SIG 320 etc) so this is just my opinion (obviously). If the little bit of grittiness and resistance wears off after some shooting it'll be a great trigger and I think I'll leave it alone as-is.
So I decided to hold off on the Apex trigger upgrade (maybe I'll attempt installing it in my fullsize on my own), and my FFL was awesome and installed the sights while I waited.. (this I probably could have done if I bought a sight pusher and laser boresight, meh, next time)
If you've made it this far you deserve some pictures!
2.0 Compact on the top, 2.0 Fullsize on the bottom. Both stock except for AmeriGlo sights. I'm surprised they didn't engrave it as "9c"... I guess they didn't want to confuse it with their original Compact.. Both pistols shown with 'ML' grip panel.
Lining the two pistols on top of each other to show the grip size difference (barrel length is 4" for Compact, 4.25" for Fullsize) -
You wouldn't think 1/2 inch would do much, but@Darth and @Willjr75 never complain it does seem to fit in the hand better.. Your capacity goes from 17 10 to 15 10.
BONUS! Smith&Wesson includes two 'sleeves' that fit over fullsize M&P mags, allowing you to use those as well -
It does leave a very slight gap where the sleeve is a little undersized, but it is hardly noticeable. From what I've read if you insert a full-size mag without the sleeve, you could potentially cause damage from over-insertion. And no one likes that!
However, this brings up one issue I have - while there are 15 round magazines available at different websites for the 2.0 Compact, no one has any 10-rounders. In fact I e-mailed S&W the other day, and they don't have a release date for them yet. (You have to be careful when shopping for them as lots of sites have them for the original Compact) I may have to order some online and have them sent to my FFL to have pinned, but in the meantime I have plenty of full-size 10 rounders.
So could this be one of the first 2.0 Compacts in NYS? I like to think so, but I'm probably wrong!
EDIT: The 2.0 Compact can use the same holster as the full-size (at least the Kydex ones I've tried)..
EDIT2: The removable backstraps on the 2.0 Compact and Full-size are NOT inter-changeable.
Also the baseplate on the 2.0 Compact magazine is smaller (Full-size on left, Compact on right) -
THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS SICKOS, that's the epoxy from the mag pinning....
