About 84 fallow deer were killed as part of a controversial Sidney Island deer cull that involved marksmen shooting from a helicopter, says Parks Canada.

Parks Canada said Tuesday in a statement that the first phase took place from Dec. 1-11. Three certified marksmen killed the 84 deer through a mix of nighttime ground-based hunting and daytime aerial work that involved one marksman operating out of a single helicopter over five days.


The goal is to restore the natural ecosystem on the island, located just off Sidney, after years of grazing by the invasive European fallow deer, with an estimated current population of a few hundred animals.

I would like to invite the First Nations People to my place for a visit. There are way too many deer around here too. I have a very successful deer season every year, not so much because I am a skilled hunter. It's just that there are so many of them. Lately, late at night or early morning, a herd of deer congregates around my apple trees in the backyard. But that's common this time of year.

You know the deer crossing signs on the side of the road that say "Deer next 1 mile" or 2 miles. There's a sign down the road from my house that says " Deer Everywhere" LOL.
For real, I'm not being sarcastic.

If the goal was to restore the NATURAL ecosystem, and the fallow deer were always on the island, then they failed miserably.
Nature has her own methods of maintaining a healthy population, up to and including starvation. If the food source can handle the extra 84 animals then there will be 84 more animals. That's NATURAL.
This is an effort to maintain a limited number of animals based on someone's confused assumption of what is "right", and funnel off money for friends/self/etc. If it were anything else they would find more NATURAL means to control the population, including letting indigenous peoples take and use the animals.
