My father was a fishing guide on the mid gulf coast of Florida.
After trying a spiral guided rod a fellow guide had made and was using way before they became popular, he had three spiral rods built to his specs and that's all he used till he retired when he turned 80.
My father never does anything for a cool factor or spends money frivolously, so if he had them made, there was an advantage.

I have a cousin that spent the last four years working on a guided fishing boat, he's now a master baiter!

I have a small ice fishing rod that has this. I’ve fished my entire life a good bit. I’ve bought a lot of gear and don’t plenty of research. This fall/winter is the first I’ve seen this.

I’m not sure on it. I can see it would put pressure points on the line and would make casting worse. I’m sure there are plenty of better fishermen than me but in my circle of friends, family and coworkers I’m the go to guy.

for me, the physical construction of the rod and reel are irrelevant. I can't fish to save my ass, so, who cares, LOL

unless we are allowed to switch to dynamite, then I could possible get something to float to the surface
