Fishing yesterday at Canadarago

Had an awesome day yesterday at Canadarago with the boy.
no kidding close to 50 perch and sunnies.
mostly 7-9” and a few 11”.
I took a break to go after bigger ones, but since we stayed in the same spot, I didn’t get anything. So I went back to fishing for the smaller ones.

anyone take a small boat like mine, 14 foot v-hill with 20 horse outboard, to some of the bays like Henderson harbor, or other areas for Lake Ontario or St. Lawrence seaway?

Or where else can we go within 1.5 hours of utica.

just want to try something new. We have fished most of Madison and Oneida County.

You’ll be fine on the st lawarence with that boat but try to avoid weekends if you can. Otherwise just hit the small inlets and stay out of the main channel.
We use bright colored or flashy Berkeley flicker shade and clean up on small mouth, large mouth and some like here and there. We go fishing there every year while camping. If you want some detail on where I go PM me and I’ll give you whatever info I have. Spinner baits work well there too, but it’s not my thing.
The lake is hit or miss and I wouldn’t do it, but plenty do. The wave kick up there pretty quick.

I should’ve done this sooner. With school starting it will be tough to avoid weekends. I even avoid weekends on local lakes much of the time.

Yup you should be GTG on weekends after this one. Besides the fishing’s better as the water cools down anyway

Agreed that weekends will be fine now. I thought you were talking next year for summer. It gets busy on weekends up there over summer break.
Im actually thinking of ice fishing up in the thousand islands this winter.

I used to fish for pike with my grandfather out of a canoe on the St Lawrence during family reunions up in Ogdensburg but that was many moons ago the bay was never busy back then.

After a Labor Day, the river is all but dead on the weekends so you’ll be fine.

Yeah, they should start moving a little shallower. They were out to 35-40’ at one point this summer, shortly after the Bassmaster elites came through.

Sorry don’t know of any free boat launches. We put in at wellsey island state park. Make sure you watch where the Canadian line is especially if you carry and boat. The line is wonky.

Clayton and A-Bay must have some. I like Clayton better than A-Bay. Clayton is a nice town with a good bakery and the hardware store is outstanding.

I detest the bay. It's tourist trap hell. and the parking is a nightmare. I only go down there once every couple years when I need a new hat or visor.

I agree that Clayton is way better. It has done a good job of maintaining the small town feel without being overly touristy.


Clayton definitely has a ramp, but you have to pay. Clayton Marina is the same way. Spicer's Bay Marina has a ramp, but it's an awful one (and you may or may not have to pay....it's our emergency ramp when a boat is dead or sinking and we need to pull it quick). Fisher's Landing is our go-to launch ramp. It's a 3 mile drive/boat to/from our place.

He definitely knows more than I do. I can catch fish there, but I do t launch boats there.

Try the CapeVincent area too. I haven’t been up there in a few years but the fishing was always pretty good.

They seem to be everywhere these days. Don’t let that stop you from some good fishing !
