Have to disagree with Jefferson at least in that I consider participation in team sports one of the most important learning experiences a child can have.

As a kid I never liked team sports, I preferred individual sports. I tried baseball, and soccer but I didn't care for them. Wrestling was the only sport I stuck with for any length of time and that's because it's just you and another guy out on the mat. While you're part of a team there's no one else that can determine whether you want to lose except yourself and your opponent.
However, I do think that team sports are a very good Learning lesson for kids as it teaches you to work on a team and how to get along with others. That's why we keep our boys in as many sports as they are willing to play, not to mention the physical benefits of exercise.
I like what Jefferson said, and Robin posted up above, but as Masterswimmer said; times are different nowadays. Back then if you injured your body you were very likely to starve and die. You needed to be physically healthy to hunt and farm in order to survive. Today, modern medicine allows us to beat our bodies up and keep going. Not to mention the way we have supermarkets and jobs that don't require any physical energy for some people.
The last point is something I never thought of. Besides the luxury of time for more recreation, we also have the luxury of time to recuperate and the care to facilitate it.
When you wrestled, you still practiced and went to meets as a team. Your time on the mat was individual, but I’d still consider that a team sport.

It surely is, but I remember wrestling and the older guys didnt show much support for younger guys, and there was alot of competition within weight classes.
And coaching my boys in wrestling this season I saw a lot of the same thing. There is not a lot of big team unity, there are cliques where people have certain friends. Of course the coaching staff brings all the kids together and teaches team unity but you see how a lot of these kids stick to their own little groups of friends. However, my boys did make new friends and overall I believe there is a benefit to being on a team.

@Celt I too enjoyed the individual aspect of the team sports. That's why I swam and ran track. But as @Airborneguy said, my teammates and I all cheered and supported one another as a team.
My kids both swam as well. Both started in elementary school and swam every season through college. Our kids both agree that swimming has helped define who they are as people today.
The endurance, patience, inner fortitude, camaraderie, and leadership skills they've acquired all in some way are rooted in their swimming experiences.
Don't underestimate how much you've actually gleaned from your time on the mat. Not every moment swimming was positive, but the overall experience was 100% positive. I would be surprised if the same couldn't be said for your grappling days.

I've had a horrible six weeks for my workout routine. First three weeks I was sick with flu-like symptoms running right into a snowstorm that destroyed my back. Laid up and kept me out of the water for 3 weeks. I got into the pool for three straight days three weeks ago. Ready to get right back into a routine.
Then as luck would have it I had a life changing event take place. My 80 y/o uncle (has no kids, or spouse anymore) was taken for a financial ride. He has early dementia and was taken advantage of by a woman who stole a lot of money from him. Long story short my wife and I took him in to live with us. He is very happy go lucky and very benevolent, so he hasn't been a burden in that sense. However, I've had my hands full making heads or tails of his situation and making sure the fraud doesn't continue. I also now have a full time 80 y/o buddy that goes everywhere with me.
I FINALLY got back into the pool Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Not sure if I'll go Monday (typically I go three on one off for recovery). I'll see how I feel in the morning. My endurance was decimated. My technique went to shit. The first day back (Friday) I did less than half my normal workout and much slower than I did when I was working out regularly. By Sunday (third day) my endurance increased by double but my time is still slow and my stroke needs more practice.
For sanity sake, not to mention my fitness and physical health, I've got to keep going. My daughter is pressing me to get back into it. My wife is totally on board (although not pressing like my daughter does). I know it's critical for me to go, but the added daily pressure's are taking their toll on me. The positive progress in three days is encouraging so I'm hopeful I can keep my head on straight and push forward.
In these six weeks I haven't gained any weight at all, but I have absolutely lost muscle tone. I see the body mass has fallen from my shoulders/chest to more around the mid-section. Very disheartening. These three days in the pool have shown the muscle tone can be brought back, but it'll take time. Freakin' sucks because I felt great fitness wise (other than my chronic severe back trouble) before all this crap.

Sorry to hear about your uncle MS, as far as a fitness goes, you know how this works. It will come back quick once you get consistent again. But as we get older we lose it quick too. Keep staying positive.

@GOPerfect , that's awesome man. When I first started this thread the intent was to help keep myself motivated and to also motivate others. And I'm glad it has. We all need to keep ourselves as fit as we possibly can. That doesn't mean everybody has to look like a bodybuilder, it means just what it says, as fit as you can be. Everybody has different ailments, ages, physical limitations, and genetic gifts. We all just have to do the best we can with what we've got. Personally, I think anyone that considers themselves a warrior to any extent owes it to themselves to be as healthy as they can be so that they are more prepared for any battle they may face.
I just passed the 4-week mark since my surgery and the shoulder is progressing well. I was going through the motions of bench pressing with very lightweight but the shoulders not quite ready yet. You can see from the picture of my shoulder joint I posted above that not only did they remove a bone spur, but they removed the underside of the acromion to create more space in there, so the bone itself has to heal.

Been doing home workouts and gym workouts when time allows. I find that home workouts are more intense and focused. My body fat is down to maybe 11-15% now. Before I was a skinny fat guy lol. It is hard but you have to really focus on what you want and your goal. Mine was of course health but going on vacation soon is what really drove me these past few weeks. Let’s keep it up guys. Gotta be fit and physically set for what’s coming......

So its about 9.5 weeks since surgery. At 8 weeks i started some light exercises and stretching. Doc cut through my delt muscle in 2 spots and there is some good scar tissue i need to break up in there as its the main source of pain/discomfort. Im doing stuff 3 days a week now.
I start with 20 min on treadmill at 8- 10% incline and walking at 3.3-3.4 mph then a 3 min cool down. That gets a serious sweat going.
Then i do a few minutes on the foam roller and lacrosse ball to loosen up the tissues. Followed by 3 rotator cuff strengthening exercises.
Heres an example of a workout. I do 5 sets total and 1st set is just warmup. Im using light weight that i can easily rep 15 times, but i do feel it, mostly stretching the muscles out. The exercises below are done WITHOUT REST in between. But i do take 1 minute before starting the next round.
Lat pull down
Dumbell military press
Bent over barbell row
Benchpress
Side lateral raises
Forearm extension
I ice the shoulder aftwards for about a half hour and it feels like its getting slightly less sore.
Ill keep doing this until its pain free and then ill start my upper/lower 3 day split.

Mostly external, and not much internal as all my shoulder problems have been largely due to too much internal rotation ( chest and shoulder work overpowered my back work).

Update 6/17/18
Since shoulder surgery ive made a slow stready progression. Although my instincts to push hard started taking over and i am dealing a minor left deltoid strain. Nothing major, but i took off last week from upperbody, and ill do the same this week. Hoping it will feel good enough by then.
Lifting was going real good though, my bodyfat is dropping, and bodyweight is up to 219, in the morning, after the morning deposit. im able to go heavy on back, moderately heavy on shoulders, but light for chest still. The right shoulder still hurts under certain positions and im not sure why, but its not getting worse so ill just keep taking it easy on any movements that are uncomfortable.

Last year through work, I went to a three day "Stress Reduction class". They have a scale system that does a full body assessment. Apparently, this machine they use is the best one the market. I received my assessment and was none to pleased with some of the numbers. I decided last May that the time was now to do some serious body overhaul. Fir the last year, I have been working hard, both mind and body. I have noticed some good results.
This past week, I went to the Stress camp again for the three day program. I was re-assessed and came away from it very, very pleased. Since May of last year, I have lost a total of 12% body fat. I have gained quite a lot of muscle in my arms, legs and trunk area. The counselors at the camp were very impressed with my results, as was I. My goal is to lose another 10% by year end.
To all that are working on repairing their body's to the looks and feel that you want and deserve, I say keep up the good work.

I'm a runner and developed achilles tendonitis in both ankles whiles training for my 6th marathon last August. After nine (9) months I'm still not healed.
A couple of weeks ago I weighted myself and found that I had put on 9.5 pounds, up to 194.5. Not wanting to allow myself to go up to 195 so I started running again. Ankles are holding up, but I have torn the meniscus in my left knee.
Sucks getting old.

Tendonitis really sucks, and it's important to listen to your body when you first start feeling the onset of it. This is something I never did in the past and it always makes things worse with much longer downtime. This little tweak I feel in my deltoid muscle was enough to make you say it's time to take a couple weeks off to let that heal before it manifests into something worse and takes me down for a longer. I have a tough time doing that, as I just want to keep going when I'm doing good but things won't heal if you keep pushing them.

I guess it's my turn for an update.
My life took a major turn back in March. My wife and I took my 80 y/o uncle in to live with us. I went from swimming 5-6 times a week to an average of 1/2-1 time per week. Went a couple weeks with zero times, then a couple of weeks going once.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with swimming as a training routine, not swimming for as much as one week you will lose a lot of endurance. It was no different for me, especially at 58 y/o.
I was swimming 2.25 miles a day 5-6 times a week. I started to get back into a more regimented routine about three weeks ago. My progress has been slow, disappointing and quite frankly almost enough to shut it down. I can't let that happen though. I've got numerous health issues that virtually demand me to take care of myself.
With the health consideration so prominent I acquiesced to basically accepting that my endurance and speed would have to take a back seat to starting from scratch.
Prior to my setback I was swimming 4,000 yds each workout.
After returning to an abbreviated routine I started with 1,000 yds. and have gradually increased my distance. Yesterday I got back up to 3,000 yds. albeit at an incredibly slower pace. The pace I kept was an embarrassing pace but I'm sticking with it. I don't know if the speed will ever return to my pre setback pace but at least I'm doing it again and I am seeing some progress.
Pre setback my resting heart rate was 43-46 bpm.
My last medically checked resting rate was back up to 55 bpm.
I will get that back down to the 40's. I'm determined.
Thanks to all you guys with your honesty and transparency with your routines and setbacks. I recognize I'm not alone. You guys rock!
