Can't believe I missed this thread. I used to be a gym rat in my younger days. Those days are loooong gone though. Had a car accident 12 years ago and that was the beginning of the end for running, lifting, skiing, golf, tennis, anything that generated compression or torque on my spine. The only activity I can do comfortably is swim.
That being said, I was a competitive swimmer in HS (waaay back in the 70's). So swimming is a natural activity for me. 1977 was my last competitive swim. Now I swim for health. I swim everyday. I do 2-1/4 miles every day. My resting heart rate (I'm 57 y/o btw) is 47 bpm. I go to the doctor very often (for a number of maladies I don't need to discuss). They say I'm in great shape. The last thing I want to do though is look good in the casket. So I'm gonna keep swimming.
I'd love to swim, but no time. I don't even have time to go to the gym. I have my own weight room in the basement. I have a bench, gym quality treadmill, elliptical, about 1500lbs of steel weights, all different bars/dumbells, rubber bands, homemade cable system, pull up bar, tie down straps with handles for bodyweight suspension work, heavy bag, speedbag, etc.....
Went to ortho today, I have rotator cuff tendonitis, but thankfully he doesn't think it's a tear. Got a shot of cortisone and done.
Good thing today was a running day to let the cortisone work first.
I got tired of gyms about 20 years ago, too many wannabes, and distractions for me. I can't stand waiting for machines, benches, etc... I am a little limited at home with not having all the equipment, but I got the biggest, and strongest lifting at home.I have a bunch of equipment at home as well. Tough to get motivated to do it at home. I go to the gym, I have zero distractions. I get much more out of it.
I miss the water and swimming. I was a swimmer in HS, pretty good at it if I may say so.
The new club we joined is an Aquatic Center. Full size Olympic Pool. I am very exited about swimming laps again.
I wish I could find a gym with a pool that 1) I could afford, and 2) had a schedule that actually works for people that have a job and family. Triathlon training is tough without a pool.
YMCA???

@camper4lyfe Find the local central school district that has a swim team and most likely a pool. Every school district in Orange County offers family swim and lap swim. Typically they start about 7pm till around 9pm. They normally charge anywhere from $1.75 to $3 or $4 per swim. Different school districts offer the lap swim on different days. Most offer 2-4 times per week.
Same goes for local colleges. Check out any type of school that has a pool. A pool not in use is a pool losing money. They all offer a community swim program. Take it from one who knows.
@camper4lyfe just look at your local HS (or central school districts') website. The information is normally posted there, with the schedule, because it is a community driven resource.
What HS is local to you?
Yeah, my kids have their swim lessons there. The cost just doesn't fit my budget (honestly, not much does), and the schedule is hit or miss.
I didn't look into cost but you might want to. Swim lessons are a whole different scenario than just lap swimming. No instructor involved in lap swim means their expense is a fraction of the cost for lessons. Pennies on the dollar. Believe me, I've swum at countless pools all over the country. I'm well versed.
My wife and I have both looked into it. It's a great facility, but doesn't fit into our life right now.
I think those ponds are one part water and two parts goose turd.
