Can you safely shoot 5.56 or .233 without a flash hider threaded onto the barrel?
Seeing good deals on uppers and Looking to smooth out the threads and have it legal here. I can do the drilling and pinning but don't have access to a welding machine to make it official.

Welding is not required by NYS a blind pin will do just fine.

Smooth out the threads? Either remove them like @MilesTeg mentioned or install a cap that will need to be pinned or welded.

Here's a link to NY compliant "faux" flash hider/muzzle break that I have used on 2 of my builds vs. just a thread protector. I like the look. The company owners designed these specifically for NY after I called them to see if they would consider doing so. Took more than 6 months before they had enough flexibility in their production schedule to produce them - they're a mall family owned shop. Not many companies are willing to make a NY specific product so I try to drive business to them any chance I get.

EDIT - one more advantage of this design is they made it with an 0.74" outer diameter so that you can slide a standard gas block over it.

These ugly sticks look a lot better when they are multicolored. I painted mine and actually got compliments on it in PA of all places.

Funny how thats the Ares SCR Lower. I have the full SCR and want to change the upper since the one it comes with is so damn basic. If I can smooth out the threads on a totally new upper that would be great. If I can get one of those thread protectors soon enough I will try that first.

As mentioned by @dsdmmat , welding isn't required. Hell, there is no mention anywhere in NY laws that even pins are required. It's sort of just accepted. There is no mention whatsoever. During the 1st AWB, manufacturers did both. Some pinned and welded and some just pinned. You can pin and use JB Weld if you like over the hole if doing it yourself for added measure.

I thought it stated somewhere that it couldn't be threaded so it it couldn't accept a muzzle device. I was considering the jbweld. Seems like that's what I'm gonna do. Thanks for the help guys.

I mean to drill, insert pin, and JB Weld the hole that's left over the top of the pin.

Yeah no I got it Willy, saw that same process somewhere on YouTube. Just don't wanna drill too deep. Just a dimple and maybe a roll pin and the jb.

yes it has a bolt hold open. And these have been out for quite awhile. I have a few all with custom built uppers.
