Flying out of NYC to FL

Anyone from Westchester or Putnam counties with CCW ever fly out on LGA or JFK with their firearm? Planning a trip to FL in July and try to figure out the logistics.

I have not flown from those airports but just follow your airline rules and you will be fine.

Another option is ups or fed ex it to yourself. Yes. Totally legal. (Do NOT sent to an florida FFL. He can not transfer it to you. )

As i said. Shipping to yourself is the only other option.

I'm from orange county. Flew out of JFK to Las Vegas with 0 issues. I did my thing and was all set before the rest of my family went through security.

Depending on where and when you were flying, some have got amazing deals (59 and 79 one way) between Stewart - Fort Myers as well as Westchester - Tampa that avoid the NYC JFK or LaGuardia issues. There is something to be said for keeping tools in several states.

Here is the quick run down. I unload my pistol ( I remove the slide because it looks a lot less intimidating to many that way), I lock it in a nano vault that is tethered to the frame of my suit case. I am the only person who knows the combo or has a key. I do not bring any ammo. I transport luggage to airport. I bring luggage to the "service desk" of airline while rest of family does the normal counter to drop luggage. I have a copy of my drivers license and pistol permit on me. I tell them I need to declare a firearm. They tell you wait to the side for an officer. Someone comes and the counter person points to you. Officer comes over and you show them what they ask for. If they ask if anyone else has combo or keys you say no. They fill out what ever they need to, mark your stuff and it goes with the rest of the luggage. You proceed to security for normal rest of airport fun.

So put in a case. Keep ammo separate.

Get pulled over and say “no for real. See my ticket for my flight? Yes I understand it is illegal in NYC. But I’m just driving through.”

Any NON FFLs want to post their experience?

As said, flights from Westchester HPN or Stewart (SWF) are better options for a number of reasons, including gun issues.

But the check in at the NYC airports is quite fine, as long as you have a NYS-issued permit (does not need to be NYC). PAPD will be called as a matter of procedure and check the permit. Airlines are pretty experienced with this and do it relatively quickly, but you might need to wait 20 minutes for the PAPD check as they come when they can.

It’s no problem, just check your airline’s rules and leave about 45 minutes extra for the rigamarole.

Check in at Newark has been and continues to be an issue, be cautious there.

I flew out of JFK to Alaska with a handgun with no issues, NYS pistol lisence issued by Suffolk County. You are always “passing through” NYC I wouldn’t even stop for gas, if a traffic stop somehow leads to police searching your locked gun (unloaded) container inside your luggage, inside the locked trunk of your car, there is a lot more that you need to worry about than just passing through. Believe it or not even residents from nearby states have flown out of NYC airports without being arrested since they were just passing through, but if you don’t have a NYS pistol permit I wouldn’t risk it, nor would I fly with featureless/fixed mag ARs.

I book my flights out of Stewart for that very reason posted in Doc's article. No way in hell I'm going to wait for a cop to declare my pistol. They may have started allowing for you to do it out of NYC recently but they have arrested more than one person from upstate in the past and it could change at a moment's notice.

The 3rd Circuit Appeals Court ruled that airline travel isn't a continuous trip since it's interrupted when you stop for FOPA purposes at the airport and only applies to vehicles. Whatever policy is in place now in NYC, can change on a moment's whim since the 2nd Circuit which is our Circuit and SCOTUS haven't ruled yet in our favor.

Winstanley was never arrested or charged with a crime because he had a NYS-issued handgun license.

He sued for the hassle given him by the PAPD. But those difficulties have since been smoothed out and they have good guidelines for the officers to follow when they are called to the check in counter. The last time I did it at LGA, two PAPD officers showed up, I showed the permit and the Glock, and they were totally cool.
