I am not much of a food prepper so I don’t really much about it quantity. How much food would I need for a family of 4 for a year?

Or... figure calories per person per day. Then multiply out for four peeps for the year. Check labels on food for caloric content, then do the math. Keep in mind that in a shtf scenario you may need substantially more calories than you consume presently. Buy mostly canned food that you eat already. That way you can rotate stock for zero cost. Don't buy MREs or mountain house freeze dried, no dented cans either. Do buy pure raw honey for sweetener, and dried milk, iodized salt, basic spices. Foods should be nutrient dense not hollow calories. Pack away some properly balanced mutivitamins to help cover deficits. Consider dehydrated water too.
From the perspective of physical volume, as a wild guess, I reckon you are looking for at least 2 - 4 standard coat closets worth of space. Maybe more. Depends on caloric needs and what foods you buy.

Just to get an idea start here Survival Food & Emergency Food Storage | Wise Food Storage. There are entire forums devoted to your question. Good luck. Many preppers start off with rice and beens. I prefer lentils. Thats about the cheapest. Best to learn how to grow your own and then can what you don't consume. But you really need to rotate your stock.
Eating two meals each per day, you would need just under 3000 meals.
May seem like a lot, but very easy to obtain.

There are many options, if you have the storage space, just start buying more of what you already eat. Rotate your stock, every week you go shopping, you buy a few more of this and that.,

I plan on freeze drying myself and buying pre packaged food. I have a large area to store the food at my parents, which is just down the road.

Dehydrated water? WTF?
Figure it out per person, per month then x12 then x4. However if you have 2 going kids and 2 adults the kids won't need as much food as adults. But if they are 2 teens it will be very similar needs.
Just random hypotetical numbers for 1 person for a month to live a very boring life/diet. No idea if these would work but just an off the top of my head guess for a very basic plan
Maybe 10 lbs of white rice
5 lbs of brown rice
10 lbs dried beans
15 cans of vegetable
2 jars peanut butter
Some canned meat
1 honey bottle
1 bottle of hot sauce or soy sauce
That's a rough estimate for 1 person for a month

I have a harvestright freeze dryer coming. The plan is to buy fresh local, in season products and store it long term. It gets good review but it isn’t perfect.

The freeze dried stuff (Wise, Mountain House) is not good for more than a few weeks. The salt and nitrate levels tend to be off the chart.
You need to cache beans/rice/protein/canned goods/vitamins.

Pasta and beans keep for a very long time and it's cheap. I bought 1 box of pasta and 1 bag of beans for each day and stored them in zip locks with an oxygen absorber. Cost is about 3 bucks for both. Just spend the 3 bucks to get both every time you go to the store and you'll never notice the cost. It adds up quickly. I've got 2 large Walmart bins full.
This is what we have decided to to. Beans and pasta or rice a bag or two every-time we go shopping. Along with some canned veggies.

I read on a prepper website to invest in a pressure cooker for the dry beans. You put the beans in the cooker to boil until the cooker starts to whistle. Then you remove the cooker from the fire and place it in a box wrapped in blankets for insulation. In 2 hours, the beans are done without a continuous flame.

I really need to work on my food stores... and a way to prepare said food. I'm good on guns and ammo (for the most part) but lacking food. It doesn't help I'm a very picky eater, though I imagine I'd grin and eat anything if I was starving..
I'm somewhat picky too....
But I figure if I actually NEED my stored food, I'll be glad and thankful to be eating it.
I'm trying to put aside things like Frank's hot sauce, spices, bbq sauce, honey, sugar etc . My thinking if I have to eat a lot of bland food some flavor will be much appreciated.
