Food plots, what to plant?

I've got an area that's well shaded by pines, the spot is fairly clear and want to plant is in the bottom of a deep and wide gully. The bottom is about 40yds by 100yds or so and is fairly flat but very well shaded with a 3 season creek flowing thru it. I would like to plant something there that would at minimum make deer hesitate as they walk thru, any idea's?

turnips , deer love them.

Berries. Easy growing and good value. Doesn't take much space.

Rye and clover is a waste of money where I live. It grows naturally. Spend money on turnips, peas, and anything broad leafed.

Food plot as in deer hunting, not a garden bud. But your right , they do cost to much!

I watch a lot of this guys videos and he’s pretty good. I don’t have the land or set up like he does so I struggle a little bit to apply his knowledge to my application.

My cousin and I have been putting in flood plots on my property the last couple of years. Usually it's a clover mix. This year I'm trying chicory. I've tried the turnips but upon further reading they more of a late planting season crop for the deer later in the year. My cousin's schedule is such that he can usually only help in the spring.

With the trail cams set up I always see deer in them. Hardly any monster bucks but the white tails do seem to go into it. I haven't found a special blend that works wonders just yet though.

Deer will eat crops like turnips in stages. They'll eat the green, tender leafy tops early then they'll hit the bulbs in the fall and winter when they're full of sugar.

If your property is located in the northern zone, so you are hunting late October onward, I would go with mix of clover and chicory. It will attract deer until covered in snow. The chicory will establish quicker than clover. It almost takes a full year to establish a good clover plot.

If property is in southern zone, so you could see snow before gun season, I would plant 40% brassica and 60% clover chicory mix. Brassica is magic in cold and snow

For the brassica, I like Maximum from Biologic. The best Year in and out.

For the clover / chicory I would go with Whitetail institute products, although Biologic products just as good.

Im over 15 years into doing food plots, (we have 9 acres out of 225 in food plots now) Deer will more than hesitate crossing a food plot. They will spend 10-15 min browsing. They will also make it a point to visit the food plot in their travels.

Do it, you will only regret not doing it sooner. The first plot I did was an experiment in an area that we saw few deer and didn’t hunt. I didn’t really expect much from it, and my hunting buddies thought It was silly. It wasn’t a great plot, but deer used it a lot and we took two deer off it that fall This was in northern zone, no doe permits at the time, and two deer off the property was a good year at the time.

I think turnips ( brassica) alone would be a mistake. It’s a long answer why, but the short answer is been there done that, wouldn’t do it again.
