Food storage deals

Rather than starting to clog up Podmonkey’s thread, I figured we could start a thread of food storage related sales. Intent being posting solid deals. To start things off, Peanut butter powder at the time of this posting, it is $12.38. Using Emergency Essentials as a reference, their price for similar product is close to $30. If prices jump, take a look back on a regular basis as they will go back down at seemingly random times.

Be aware that pricing on Amazon is quite volatile. The buttermilk pancakes I posted yesterday at $7.32 for a #10 can are as of this AM currently priced at $13.24.

The prices on Amazon jump like crazy depending on who’s selling it. Also look at reviews of seller and make sure it’s not a third party seller. We ran into an issue where it was a 3rd party seller and they refused refunds. It was only a $9.00 pair of sunglasses so no big deal but if your spending a lot then you want to watch for this.

Here's a related question.

Any suggestions for storage for the cheap bulky items ?

Things like sugar and salt that you can buy a 50lb sack at Cosco for $20.

I want to store them in a better container than the paper sack they come in, But I don't really want to spend more on the container than the product in it either.


Right now I've been transferring things like that to 5 gallon pails, and using those gamma seal screw on lids.

I would prefer something metal for things that might attract pests, but putting $20 worth of product in $60 worth of containers just rubs me the wrong way...

if you happen to have an abundance of half gallon mason jars, those work as well for sugar and salt. Don’t need oxygen absorbers for those things.

Those are great for things oxygen will degrade, and things you don't care about resealing.

But what I really want is a 5 gallon ammo can.

I'd actually thought about putting rice in 20mm cans (lined with a suitable bag of course). But again, the container costs more than the contents.

And IIRC, you also have one of the Harvest Rights and the best storage solution for the food I’ve found is the Mylar bags in those storage bins pictured above

A 55 gallon drum with removable lid and locking ring will store a lot of individually packed bags, while keeping all the critters out.

You could also look at the one gallon paint cans with the gold colored linings. Should be under $5 per can. But the cost will still add up.

Those are great for things oxygen will degrade, and things you don't care about resealing.

Spices, sugars and salts can be stored long term in Food Safe plastic bottles as well.

Wash them out with bleach water, completely dry, and fill. Screw the cap on tight. I wrap tape around the seal as well.

They also have a smaller 30 or 35 gallon 'grease' barrel, I have one with the removable lid (I lost the locking ring) and it's so much easier to reach into.
