Yes maple is some hard stuff. Those damn pins even stop 5.56 round. So I’ll note what you said about a bad day while playing 10 pin.My FIL gave me some bowling pins to use for target practice. I learned something from them, and that is that bowling pins think nothing of your weak bullets. They just suck up bullets like it was Sunday dinner. Seriously, if you're ever in a bowling alley and a mass shooting breaks out, go hide behind the pins.
(related because bowling pins are wood with a plastic wrapping)

Yeah the .50 with standard ball goes clean through 4 so my thinking is in the triangle there never more than 4 deep. Didn’t try it yet, but it’s great you brought up the bowling pin thing. Probably the most cost effective reusable target for standard shooting. Go for like 12 dollars on eBay. And you got them for nothing? Who’s better than you!
I would just keep shooting pistol calibers at themThey're so durable, I think I still have 6 that haven't been shot yet. He gave them to me 15 years ago...
13 years ago when I got my first Glock, a G22 (.40 Cal) I pinned my targets to a popple sapling about 3” diameter. After a few weeks of newbie shooting, it fell over, cut down by the lead.don't cut any trees at my camp, we use them as backstops. a few trees had so many holes in them we had to cut them down, LOL
