Ft Drum Delivery driver’s gun confiscated; group says his rights were violated

The DOD Guards ( government employee) and MPs are on our gates. No private contact guards are on our gates.
Been quite some time since I have been to Drum.
The last time I was there, they had Securitas security working. DOD cops were there as well. I think that was 03

Yep Coastal Security used to be the guys on the gate. Somewhere a between 05 or 11 ( I cannot remember) the Army said hire guards and end the contract. Then when the war ended in Iraq they reduced the size of the Blue suit force ( federal cops and guards) and increased the MP presence on the gate. Today we have a mixture of both at the gate and on the road but, no contractor is involved with guarding or patrolling the post.

A lot of people are confused. They still think we live in a free country.
Someone from Virginia might find the idea of a pistol permit just to keep one locked in a box in your truck as foreign as you would consider British knife laws.
Imagine you drive down to Florida and end up in some accident, then spend years in prison for an 'illegal hidden compartment" in your truck, because you had a spot to keep a gun in that's perfectly legal up here.
That's probably what this guy feels like. If he had any idea it was illegal he wouldn't have announced it to the guard.

I never thought about gvmt owned off post buildings and can understand that, never seen it regarding housing but makes sense.
I have seen (once) on the NYS thruway an accident and a couple of MP's where the first on scene, they assumed command and directed traffic, much as I have done in the past as no one else was willing! As far as crimes go and arrest powers, I still think it could be argued either way.
They don’t patrol of base housing at least up here ( not even when it was government leased). They are not required to have a pistol license but they have no authority to carry or own a handgun in the PRNY outside of their duty either.
No. Members of the military are exempt from all types of gun laws while executing their duties. Not just MP', many convoys have some of the Soldiers armed as they travel through the States.

Yep, on or off post, if I was on duty, and carrying an authorized and issued handgun, I was exempt. Mostly to escort credit union personnel to a financial institution off post. The only MP's authorized to carry handguns off duty were commissioned officers, because technically they're never off duty.
Nor was I authorized to wear my MP brassard or badge on my uniform,when off duty, as commissioned officers were.

Military bases are typically restricted to "public" access, and the "public" is rarely, if ever, required to be there. Not like being required to go to a .gov building to get driver's licenses, building permits, etc.
