Had to stop at the DMV while out doing other errands and as almost always I am carrying, I've done it plenty of times in the past, just tell the deputy at the entrance and then go lock it up in the lock box in their office. Pretty regularly between the DMV and VA rep (both same building) in the past that the one deputy that was always on duty knew me and that I was carrying before I even got to the door.
Well it was a new officer there today. I stepped in and first handed him my driver's license and my handgun license and here is how the whole conversation went.
"Good morning I am heading to the DMV and I need to lock my firearm in the lock box"
Him "um you cant have one in this building, you dont have it with you right now do you? We dont have anything to lock it in"
Me "yes I do have it on me, and I know there I'd a lock in the office righ there I have done this in the past"
Him "no if you have it on you you are going to need to go put it in your car"
Me "I'm sorry I dont really feel comfortable leaving a gun in a vehicle that could be broken into and it stolen"
Him "well there is a long line you might be here a bit"
He calls the other deputy from the office to send others through the metal detector
Him "follow me, I appreciate that you declared this from the start. Where is the gun at, and I need to see your license..." he then took the gun off of me, (I'm not the most comfortable with that but it was In a holster and figured let's mitigate any issues by just letting him take it, and he did grab it as far back on the grip as he could vs say a shooting grip)
He then looked at my license and said "which one is this on here. Well now, how many glocks do you own" we laughed and I explained on is just a frame so the two listed is more or less 1.5 glocks.
All in all he was very nice the whole time, and I think after he suggested I leave it in the car and I told him I wasnt to comfortable leaving a gun in a busy parking lot he realized that it would be best all around to secure it in their lock box
And in the office he did ask to verify that I have done this before and we talked a quick sec. And now I'm stuck at the DMV
