Gabby Giffords' gun-control group gets new law enforcement allies
WASHINGTON — Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, have some new allies in their fight to end gun violence. And all of them are armed.

A coalition of law enforcement officers will help them oppose gun legislation pending in Congress, including a bill that would lift restrictions on firearm silencers and another that would require states to accept concealed carry permits from other states, even from states with weaker requirements.

Law enforcement officers were quick to sign on, said Kelly, the son of two police officers.

“These are issues that make it more difficult for cops to do their jobs and it also makes communities less safe,” Kelly, a retired U.S. Navy captain, told USA TODAY in an interview.

Kalamazoo, Michigan, Department of Public Safety Chief Jeffrey Hadley will appear with gun control proponent Gabby Giffords Monday to argue against suppressor ownership by “everyday Americans” and to oppose national reciprocity for concealed carry.
Hadley is one of 20 law enforcement officers who have agreed to be part of Gabby Giffords’s “Law Enforcement Coalition for Common Sense.” The group will be announced Monday and will talk about “reasonable” gun control on Capitol Hill.
Hadley claims national recognition of concealed carry permits will lead to a setting where “there [could] be more people carrying weapons that shouldn’t be.” This is the same argument that gun control advocates make when a given state goes from being “may issue” to “shall issue” or when concealed carry permit holders in a state like Wyoming are on the verge of being able to carry guns on campus for self-defense.

The argument assumes that criminals have been waiting for concealed carry permit laws to change before they carry guns to use in crimes.

According to USA Today, Hadley also opposes the suppressor deregulation contained in the Hearing Protection Act. He “doesn’t understand why an everyday American needs a silencer,” and he argues that making them accessible to law-abiding citizens will only lead to criminals using them to keep police from ascertaining the location from where shots were fired.

Too much for this setting (I gave up long ago on in-depth policing discussions), but this is the basis of a strong belief I hold which many of my coworkers don't so much disagree with, but simply don't even think about due to how ingrained it is in modern policing to "take responsibility" for crimes as they happen or if they might due to known indicators.

I strongly believe that the public would be much more accepting of "old school", tough - even dare say - more violent policing if our only focus was responding to crimes that have actually occurred in the immediate moment or are being actively investigated after the fact, as opposed to the current system which heavily leans on intervention before crimes occur.

My current position in domestic violence is a perfect example of policing under the belief that we are somewhat responsible for not stopping repeat victimization in the crime category that historically sees the highest rate of it. It's absurd, but it keeps me off the radio, mostly dry and not cold/hot, with good days off and guaranteed gym time.
