The economy ministry said it was putting a unit of Russian oil firm Rosneft (ROSN.MM) under the trusteeship of the industry regulator and taking over the business’ Schwedt refinery, which supplies 90% of Berlin’s fuel…


The Schwedt refinery has posed a dilemma for Berlin for several weeks, as it has received all of its crude from Russia, but Germany is resolved to eliminate imports of oil from Russia by the end of the year under European Union sanctions.


Taking over Schwedt, however, risks retaliatory measures from Moscow. Scholz said Germany had gamed out a possible sudden stop in crude supplies from Russia, adding: “That is why we are prepared.”


A policy document released by Berlin on Friday showed that it is in talks with the government of Kazakhstan on securing oil deliveries for Schwedt.

Could they not see that beyond the economic gains Russia would net that the secondary national security threat was most likely baked in to the thought process for Russias benefit? Putin isn't stupid, I guess most of Europe is. Additionally, this is a PRIME example of moving too quickly towards a green energy solution without deep thought on the potential consequences and contingencies. Europe ran head first into the conversion to green energy vastly accelerating thier programs to dump fossil fuel ASAP, without regard to its own potential threat to its existence. Cold kills FAR more people annually than heat, and now they face those consequences.
