This just reminded me i have a headlamp with batteries out, and a handheld edc light. Chap stick, crazy glue, altoid tin with small items, altoid tin fishing kit, and gloves.

Just another thought. Did the treadmill again today with pack on and ended up getting chafed. Whats the best stuff to use for chafing? Couldnt imagine having to walk for 10 hours after getting chafed after 30 minutes.

Anyone need to cross a waterway for their get home route, what if your primary get home route is not possible, do you have a back up, have you scouted it?

I have something called a Life raft, in case i ever have to get over a body of water. When rolled up and packed, it is about the size of a loaf of Wonder bread. It does NOT need a pump to inflate it either. Simply unravel it and snap it out in the air, like you would a garbage bag to "inflate" it, and it will fill up with air and then close and secure the one end, like a common water proof bag used on a kayak or small boat. It is very sturdy and strong. Although small and convenient, it is also durable, and not easily popped, and reusable as well.

I dont have a link, but if you look up the company Uncharted supply company, its called the Rapid raft. It is listed under there products. This company makes 72 hour bug out bags, that for a pre made bag, are VERY good. They also sell portable battery chargers, re fills for the bags, and a few other items.

The rapid raft is very cool though. It actually can sit 2 people once filled up.I believe the website is Unchartedsupplyco.com

I'd say 3 mags (2 spare plus one in the gun) and a box.

If you do survive a gun fight, and you're a couple days from home, you might not want to be walking around with only half a mag left.

The box is much lighter and smaller than the equivalent in loaded mags.

Thats the one, thanks Robin. I have 2 of them in my top of the line bug out bags. Plus a Henry ar7 survival rifle, packed up in each of those same bags too. I have bug out and bug home bags for EVERY possible scenario.

I've quickly built simple Coracles using a tarp, rope or twine and small branches. They've worked suprisingly well for impromptu River or Lake crossings in both training and survival scenerios.

Me personally I wouldn't listen to anything with earbuds. If I'm "walking home" shit has gotten crazy and I want my hearing to be as alert and in tune to my environment as possible.

I would be more likely to try and find a quiet secluded hide and listen very quietly over its speaker there while resting and trying to get my bearings and situational awareness on what is going on

OTOH, hearing on the radio that your planned route has a bridge out, or some ambush set up might be more useful than hearing that racoon digging through the trash.

Youre likely correct, but if you have an extended get home trip more ammo may be useful.

I guess the biggest concern is how far from home are you anticipating having to walk. How many days are you expecting. What are your expected threats or hunting opportunities.

My work commute is at least 50 miles and up to 70 depending on what jobsite im at in NYC. With current laws I cant carry in NYC so its moot for me now, but if I could carry in NYC Id probably feel better with 5 mags (if we could have standard cap mags if be fine with 3 17rnd mags). Id like to think I could walk 20 miles per day. Perhaps I could find a bike in the city and use that, but I'm prepared for walking and I train for it.

Since you would likely be trying to get home from NYC, I suggest adding a stilcock key to your setup.

I have one in my truck. But its not in the bag, i need to put it in my bag already so I dont have to dig for it in an emergency. I actually have alot of extra stuff in my truck to supplement my bag. My main plan is to get the hell out of the city asap, but depending 9n the situation I may have to wait. There are so many scenarios that one could plan for so ive tried to narrow down my focus to cover the "average".

I dont know if you ever go into nyc, but if you do, make sure you remove the ammo from your bag.

If you are going to be in NYC figure out how and where to get across a river(s) like the Hudson, East, Harlem, the Spitting Devil, or the harbor

How far have you traveled like that and what wave conditions? I don’t have a lot of confidence in such a method for any crossings from NYC that I know of. I would feel good about it at the river crossings in to PA however.

Seeing as my job can take me anywhere from a couple hundred feet to the other side of the county, my bags a bit bigger. The contents are based on the idea that for whatever reason I have had to abandon my vehicle and walk home.

All contents are housed in a Kelty Redwing 50 hiking bag as to be as "grey" as possible

Water- 32oz Nalgene bottle (empty)
a life straw for filter other sources of water
I also rotate 2 or 3 plastic water bottles every couple weeks (depending on weather)
Food- Usually 4 Clif Bar protein bars
Clothes- 1 set of earth tone pants and long sleeve shirt (even if its summer the long sleeve is nice to protect from the sun and also conceal identifying features). Earth tones tend to blend in either urban or rural setting.
Always good to carry an extra pair of wool hiking socks in a plastic zip lock bag.
A generic dark color ball cap
Self Defense- 3 extra magazines for my EDC carry gun
Also a PCC that excepts the same mags.
I always EDC a Spyderco or Benchmade knife as well
Misc- head lamp (nice to stay hands free some times)
flash light (small self defense style light from surefire)
Med kit AND trauma kit with tourniquet (ones for boo boos, the other for big ouchies)
bio degradable personal wipes
2 Bic lighters and water proof matches in a plastic zip lock bag
a 6x8 tarp (multiple uses)
bag of zip ties 11" long
2-N95 masks
a Buck knife (for more utility type tasks)
small write in the rain notebook
a pen and a sharpie
Garmin GPS unit (pre loaded with a few likely routes that can get me home with minimal human contact)
spare batteries (luckily Garmin and head lamp take same type

3- sets of gloves. 1 winter, 1 "tactical", 1 leather work

There may be a few smaller items I forgot but that's the bulk of it. Also depending on the season I carry a spare set of boots, a blanket, and a winter jacket. Those items are in my vehicle though not the bag

Each crossing was a different improvised freshly made craft but I crossed the Hudson near both Piermont and Kingston, also raced a few miles in Lake Champlain, crossed the Chemung River near Waverly, Crossed the Susquehanna River near Owego, and crossed Lake Cayuga and back on a bet. Most of time we used improvised paddles but a few times we used canoe paddles. I think I was stone sober for most of the crossings. I would never rely on a craft like this in high seas.

Ill have the wife drive me 10 miles out in the AM and see how I do. At 48 my body wont take a beating like i could at 28 or even 38 for that matter. I know i could do a 50 mile trek in a real shtf because i would have to, but starting with a shorter distance will give me some good data to work with.

30 pounds on a treadmill. It’s a start but are you wearing the same shoes or boots you would have on such a trek?
Due my age, injuries etc I think 30 pounds would be my limit. My get home bag is modular in concept. I plan to ditch a lot of it before staying out. I have it set up in case I am dressed in less than proper clothes like a suit or need more clothes like in winter.
My stuff looks like stuff I would take to the gym as not raise eyebrows and blends with the other people.
If I take the train into NYC , I can’t carry much but I really don’t need much that matches/ lighter, duct tape, plastic contractor garbagebags, change of clothes and perhaps shoes, survival candle, lifeboat ration or millennium bars, water filter, water purify tablets, single wall metal water bottle, Mylar blanket/ bag, rag cloth/towel in addition to my EDC (knife, smartphone, headphones, firearm , ( my retired LEO permit is good in Nyc) spare mag , phone charger/ flashlight, small medication/ boo boo kit, Kleenex pocket tissues, matches,wallet items like ID, cash, credit cards etc, multi tool). I have my shoe laces and belt for cordage if needed. A coat depends on the weather.
I need to travel light if something happens. This can change depending on perceived circumstances or if I am driving all the way in.
River crossings, I doubt I would even attempt it unless I find someone with a real boat or an open bridge. It’s not a realistic scenario in my mind to need to do it with a get home bag.

Hiking the distance home in one day would be a pipe dream. I have some friends along the way I think would put me up for a night or two.
