Getting started with Action Pistol/3 Gun

Hey all. I'm waiting for my pistol permit to be issued in upstate NY and was wondering how I could get into action pistol and/or 3 gun events once it comes.
Are there any ranges in upstate NY that lets you practice these types of events (moving and shooting, reloads, etc), or is it just a thing you have to jump into comps to practice?
Are there rules about the type of guns you can use for these events too? Can I use red dots/prism scopes, and what type of rifles are allowed for 3 gun?

There are many clubs around NY for action pistol. Go to USPSA and you should be able to locate a club near you. This website will also list the various divisions available and the equipment requirements for each.

Otisco Lake Rod & Gun runs/ran 3-gun matches... always a great time!
When you say "Upstate" it helps to be a bit more specific: Folks from NYC think Albany is upstate without considering the Adirondacks, Central, Northern, and Western NY...the farther North and West you go, them more Gun Clubs you find.

Start with a new state unless you to shooting neutered firearms.

I should say Capital District then. I'm willing to travel an hour or so for stuff though.

The Clubs I listed blow all have pistol matches IDPA, USPSA, Steel Challenge and ICORE (Kayadross has there own action pistol and they are well known for Cowboy Shoots) and many Clubs use practicescore to list upcoming matches and results. My Club is Sara Spa we also are starting to get into NRL22. As far as I know these are all open to non-members, you may need a Safety Orientation as to rules and drawing from the holster. I hope this helps get you started.
