This is a horrible situation.

The defensive firearms user may have been law-abiding. But, he showed extremely poor situational awareness. He should never have fired his pistol at a fleeing robber when the backstop was an occupied street. Firing into a vehicle that you "think" contains a fleeing bad guy is unacceptable.

On Monday, Earls and his wife were at the ATM at around 9:45 p.m. when another man walked up to their vehicle and robbed them at gunpoint, Slinkard said.​

As the suspect fled on foot, Earls got out of his vehicle and opened fire, including at a pickup truck he thought the robbery suspect had climbed into, police said.​

2. Never let the muzzle point at anything that you are not willing to destroy.

Ignore any one of them and bad things can happen. Very sad situation. Besides, it seems that the threat was over and him shooting was in retribution or his emotions got the best of him along with adrenaline.

That sucks.. I dont support mandatory training for firearms owners, it sure is important. If the gov wants to take proactive measures they should offer free firearms training, pr perhaps make it tax deductable. Training needs to be incentivized to help reduce accidental/negligent shootings.

I hear you, and good point. I was coming more from a position of expecting the gun banning discussion to arise from the left after something like this, and offering a constructive alternative to "do something".

But, because we are a country with a 2a, and the people ARE the militia, and considering that well regulated means trained and ready; firearms training should be offered in every grade school. And I still think that it should be made tax deductible, at the least to make it more affordable to low income families.

Banning guns is something the far left wants to do, regardless of this incident. The "left leaning" aren't anywhere near that even in spite of this.

The 2A is very short in text. A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The commas are important as they separate idea blocks. Idea 1: A well regulated militia is important to the security of a free state. Idea 2: The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

The people are the militia, but that doesn't mean there should be training provided by taxpayers unless it's formal militia training since it's the militia that is important to the security of a free state. You have a right to bear arms regardless if you are in a militia or not. Based on the original text and intent I'm fine with tax paid training for an actual citizens militia for service of country. I'm not OK with taxpayer paid training because Joe Blow wants to learn to shoot his personal pistol, even if it is for self defense. That responsibility falls to him.

EDIT: Personally I think it would be awesome if my local school offered responsible firearms training to our students. As much as I'd like firearms education for *my* kids, based on the above logic I don't think it would be a fair of me to ask taxpayers to do that. When the time is right for them I will teach them on my own - that's my responsibility, not the public's.

Today's kids go to school wearing what they slept in or, what they are going to do PE in. Heck even adults don't even bother looking trim and proper anymore.

There's a guy at work that likes to work out, and he wore tights/leggings and a hoodie to a professional meeting today! Here I am wearing decent gray slacks, my Iron Rangers freshly polished up, a dress shirt buttoned down a bit, with a cardigan sweater with my pocket protector filled my favorite fountain pen, ball point, and mechanical pencil. I don't really want to get this thread too far off track, but I understand your point. However, even the unorganized militia should be eligible for training and munitions on the taxpayers dime. Anybody that falls within the criteria of the unorganized militia, or voluntarily wants to be part of the unorganized militia should be able to receive an allotment of ammo for yearly training, along with some training classes. But this will never happen so to discuss it is somewhat of a moot point.

Isn't the idea of a deadline force incident to stop the threat and break contact with said threat? Engaging a fleeing target isn't breaking contact, its continued engagement. Tables turned at that point. Now, a fleeing target still has the capability of dispensing deadly force, but with limited information his best course of action should have been to disengage. The thief should also be charged with negligent homicide equally.
