I am curious to see how this pans out. Did he have rails and the rest of the components to complete? As they are they are not firearms. Isn't there case law in NY about a pistol with missing/broken parts not being unlawful possession?
I find the printing community interesting so I keep tabs on the scene, some of those models I have never seen before. It makes me wonder if they are even pews or are airsoft?

Copper Brass Aluminum Titanium etc etc all are hard to detect with standard walk through detectors. I have a titanium implant and have never set off a detector., nor does my brass belt buckle.

Its all on the sensitivity level of the detector. False alerts from jewelry, shoe eyelets, glasses, coins, etc are not desired in most environments. In addition to gain control discrimination there are differing types/quality of detector and how they sense. A "typical" metal detector in a school, public building etc is likely set at the lowest discrimination setting. For testing they actually have test blocks with a handgun encased in resin to carry through as well as metal bars of a specific size, this is how they verify and can set gain. Airports are going to be higher and prisons will not allow any metallic object through.

There are printed designs out there that other than some springs are metal free.

I'll pass. With enough girth anything is possible, but it would make it impractical. The limit right now is .22 with a carbon fiber barrel liner. The printed community is a inventive bunch, its only a matter of time before they cone up with a more practical and useful solution.

It doesn't have to be polymer.

There are lots of exotic materials that are becoming less exotic by the day.

You could find cheapie ceramic knives in dollar stores. That would have been unheard of a few years ago.
