After owning a featureless AR for the last few years I decided to build a fixed mag so I can have all my features back. The question I have is which mag is the most reliable since it will be stuck in the lower for good? Are the plastic Magpuls the way to go or just use a metal mag?

You definitely would want one with an easily removable floorplate. Magpul is fine imo.

A 2nd for the 10rnd magpul for the above reason. The first double feed that occurs or when you need to empty a full magazine, you will be glad you have an easily removable floor plate.
Magpul also makes a 5 round limiter if you want to use it hunting, and it is very easy to install and remove.

Just sent them an email to ask if a 6.8SPC version is in the works. Or possibly replacing the follower with one for a 6.8 and grinding back the ears to 6.8 specs, anyone know if that can been done. I suspect the rib indents make the interior too narrow, but I got to ask.

I wonder if they have a speed loader to increase reloading speed of the fixed mag.
That’s the only thing that feels left to be desired for me on the compmag.

I'm guessing since it needs a standard follower to feed the round into the chamber, that MA Loader should work.
Please do a review, this looks like a fantastic idea

Kinda defeats the point of the little window. What about something that holds the rounds all together, without having a follower? Almost like a Garand clip of sorts, that you could throw into the rifle, and remove the empty clip later on? Something that isn't pushing the rounds in, but maybe you release the old clip via a door or something, and throw a new one in, and shut that?
My gut says the clip will be interpreted as a magazine, even though it's not, but who knows. It's a fine line.
Anyone have experience with how NYS views clips vs magazines?

The little window can be used to unload only if you don't want to load that way. You can't do that with a regular magazine.

I received it last night. Install was a breeze and took all of 2 minutes. I have mixed feelings on it so far. It is very easy to load rounds and I like the look of having a "full size magazine" in the gun. What I don't like is two things I noticed. 1) that the bolt hold open did not appear to work, (might have been me, have to take a closer look tonight) and 2) the follower tended to stick and not allways feed rounds all the way up (was using dummy rounds). Now granted it might need to get broken in a little or lubricated, so we shall see.

There is no removeable floorplate as far as I can tell. You can however pull the follower and follower spring back down and open the side door. In regards to clearing a jam I don't have an opinion on that yet. When I get more time this week I will be doing some testing with dummy rounds and purposefully be inducing a jam to see how easy or tough it is to clear.

Have you ever thought about going with a tier 5 bolt catch? You can do a nice set up with and add a magpul B.A.D lever and this makes it a bolt action and you can have all your features.

dark storm sells a speed loader for the fixed mag, they didnt make it, its from another company (forgot the name, $35) but it works pretty well (gets jammed a lot if you dont hold it right).

In every AR ive built I've used Magpul 10 rounder except my 6.5 grendel..
I've used pretty much every mag lock kit except the Mean arms one (this one look to be the safest chose). Of the ones I have used the DD's Ranch for fit&finish and price is my favorite and if you get the pins from them too the price it is just unbeatable.

There's two companies that I know of that make an ejection port speed loader. Mean Arms and Bear Flag Defense. Imo having used both the bfd is the better option. Plus they are the same price.
That's a Bear Flag loader I just pick one im going to write up a reveiw in a week or so.

I have a friend that thinks the tier 5 set up is the worst. Says to much time in between shots and would rather lock the mag.

I like it way more than the mean arms one. It feels sturdier and works better too.
I only handle a means loader that a friend had and yes the BF loader feels much sturdier and heftier.

He's not using it right. There's a way to use it when people are watching and another way to use it when you need to use it for real.
Recently I shot a NY compliant AR, and it was nowhere near as bad as I had been lead to believe.
Having shot sporting rifles with "open" pistol grips for years, adapting to "snake" stock was easy.
It was a 300 B/O, with a bit heavier barrel and the Timney "long" 2 stage match trigger. (wonderful!!!)
Much rather have the detachable mag. Having 30 rounders hidden in the wall would be useful should the manure hit the wind mover vs messing around with a top loader.
Insofar as cans and flash hiders go, VDCA makes an adapter to clamp on your plain barrel to mount a can or brake

OR you could buy an AUG like mine and store it in the wall with 5 40 round magazines !
