A Republican state senator from the Hudson Valley has set off a firestorm by proposing legislation that would require New Yorkers to present a government-issued photo ID at polling sites on Election Day.

Photo ID laws have been popular in Southern states, which supporters like New York Sen. Terrence Murphy (R-Putnam), the bill sponsor, claim deter fraud there.

But opponents, including Democratic lawmakers and civil-rights groups, argue that they discriminate against minorities and lead to voter suppression. Photo ID laws in Texas and other states have been challenged or struck down in court.

“This is right out of the Trump playbook. Legislation like this has no place in New York. We need to make it easier to vote and not set up unnecessary road blocks or dangerous scare tactics,” said Senate Democratic minority leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Democrats will try to force votes Monday on several bills to ease voter access, including early voting, automatic voter registration and making voter intimidation a crime.

Murphy defended his bill.

“Our right to vote is among our most sacred,” he said, adding that the bill asks for the same residency requirements as a “recreational fishing license.”

Sure legislation like this has no place in Democratic NY. More like us dems can't have a form of proof before you vote. That's racist, causes voter suppression, and would help deter fraud. Plus it won't allow illegals to vote. Bills to ease voter access? Without a photo ID there should be no early voting, or this automatic voter registration. Voter intimidation? Now they should know all about that.

I'm confused, don't you already need an ID to REGISTER to vote in NY? I had to provide my driver's license information when I registered to vote (I did it through the DMV website). So how do people register to vote in the first place (outside of doing it online or at the dmv). I'm not talking about showing up on election day but just having your name registered.

NY gives out DL's to anyone .. legal or not here ..

Let's see...

They oppose requiring identification of verification in order to exercise one Right, to Vote. But for another, to own a firearm, these same people want identification, criminal BG checks, extended waiting periods and more!

They say it unfairly discriminates against a class of people (minority) and yet, they fail to see the discrimination against those who wish to exercise their 2A Rights are subject to the hurdles they must suffer.

I say it all the time... "SAME" scrutiny "MUST" be applied! If it's OK for one Right, then it is for all. I need to suffer the scrutiny of the State in order to exercise my 2A Rights, you can suffer the same to Vote! Too bad...
