So my 'rents (the people I live in the basement of and all that hilarity) got to the point in their permit process that they needed to have a gun on layaway before they got their permit.

I took them to my favorite gun store, and explained to the salesman that they wanted a subcompact single stack, based on years (yeah...years...they take a while) of research (and me explaining.)

They employee was very nice, and only talked out of his element once or twice. I know Glocks have 3 passive safeties. (I take mine apart to the bone on a regular basis...need that Armorer's course before I use the term officially) They wanted (and I hate, but it's not for me) an ACTIVE safety.

And today they put 50% down on each a S&W M&P Shield 40 and a Ruler LC9s 9mm, in Neptune coloring.

Damn that Neptune is nice.

"Dude, would you PLEASE get these 2 rounds out and compare them?"

Then my dad paused...confused...then said "still .40"

The thing I am glad for though is the 1 lie I got told.

"Yeah, the S&W, M&P Shield 40 has a trigger pull of 9lbs." (Lie)

"The M&P Shield Pro is around 4." (Lie)

I get it, the guy was trying to make a buck, but to tell me the M&P shield 40 standard is 9lbs...please...No.

I've heard all sorts of things by these experts.

You can only load 7. You can't put a preban mag in a postban gun. An SKS is an Assault Weapon. A KSG is illegal. These Hornady Critical Defense bullets are what the cops use. The Hydroshocks are the exact same thing as the HST's. It's just a new name. Ect.

I can see a military person being set in their ways regarding safeties. Absent a select few issued Glocks, every military firearm has a safety switch/lever which is a serious part of the training the soldier/sailor/Marine recieves on that weapon system.

When I became a cop, it took me a bit to get used to not having an external safety on my Smith and my Glock. Now I couldn't imagine dealing with one on a carry firearm! The only handgun I own with a safety is my 1911.

I was thinking the same thing. I grew up in a non hanging family so safeties were a must on any long gun. Then joined the military and they just reinforced this principle. It too a little bit to undo the conditioning and accept a pistol without an external safety.

I like my Shield 40. If anything, it taught me to shoot better. Better grip, better wrist mechanics, better recoil recovery/management. Mine also has a safety, only because where I bought it didn't have one in stock without a safety. I only have it on when I'm carrying around the house.
