Got a phonecall from my permit office today

Like the title says got a phone call today from the permit office, they left a voice mail asking me to b call them back as soon as i could. So I did obviously, cause what could they want.


Permit office answers and I tell her I am returning her phone call.

(Paraphrasing) hello yes, I was calling because back in May of 2019 you purchased a glock frame from [Redacted] Gun Shop (they actually just did the FFL transfer) and they listed the caliber as mulit. The NYS Police said that I must list all the calibers and cannot have it as just multi.

Me > oh ok well then we will just go with 9mm, .40sw, .357sig, do I need to come in and fill anything out or get a new license printed.

Her > no I am taking care of everything now and next time you come in and update anything it will be on there.

Me > ok thank you have a good day

Then I remembered I have my AR pistol that I bought last year also listed as multi caliber.. so I call back and just tell her she might as well just update that to .450bm and 5.56 so I don't have to deal with anything later.





***funny part looking at these now, thr G45 is listed as pistol when I only bought the frame lol***

I was planning on doing an AR pistol and a bunch of different calibers. I guess if they ask what calibers I would have to have them list every caliber from 22LR to 50 beowolf. One pistol would need about 5 permit cards lol

I know, I know... And it's funny because it's not something I've ever really paid much attention to! Until now, lol

For instance, those nice .22 conversion kits that can save you a bundle if you're an avid shooter. This would require the "same" pistol to be "re-registered" ? lol. Or like my .357Sig (229) that lets say for some reason I just don't like the kick anymore, and went to softer shooting with the 9mm barrel and slide on the same frame. Is entire silly to need it to be recorded and recognized by the "issuing authority" IMO of course. What purpose would this serve?

Now, that all said, and I'm not an attorney (lol) but I can't see this ever becoming an issue, if discovery is made by law enforcement, for any reason that the caliber of your pistol doesn't match the listing on your "PAPERS", but the serial # does! This is compounded by the fact that you can legally purchase "parts" and have them on hand, such as barrels and slides or conversion kits, which is not controlled.

Who's to say a mistake like in the OP wasn't made by them. Is it really your obligation to correct it then? It's all on them... And now I'm educated to this issue, when I register anything going forward, I will list every caliber the firearm is available in, hahahaha! Because are you required to actually possess the "parts" in order to list them when their registration is not specifically covered by law? So just list every caliber, or will they then require receipts (proof) of purchase? Omg I could just keep rambling... Apologies

Oh no need for an apology. Honestly if this was a different county I probably wouldn't be so "nonchalant" about it, but as far as NY goes mine is super lax hell these updates aren't even costing me any money, I'm not required to come in and get an updated license and im sure if I want to add other calibers I would just need to go in in the future and just say hey go ahead and add these as well to the one handgun.

Now if I lived in one of the counties that require tla receipt showing I bought those conversion barrels and like another 4473 or other nonsense l. Well then this post would deff be much different

@Cooolone I put mine on my license as I sometimes assist with my Counties pistol safety class and wanted to know the procedure. And also if it was unlawful (IF IF) I didn't get jammed up!

The NYSP database has a non-optional field for caliber.

Once a bureaucracy is in place, you don’t need to pass laws. Just make it impossible to fill out the paperwork and you have effectively outlawed something.

Listing the calibers reinforces their database for when they institute the ammo purchase database only allowing sales to calibers you own.

It's their way of implementing more infringements.
