Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Governor Kathy Hochul has taken steps to address the ongoing road salt shortage in New York, including suspending the hours of service requirements for all truck drivers to increase deliveries.
Friday, Governor Hochul was in Rochester and answered a couple of questions 13WHAM had about the rock salt shortage that has caused concern across the state and locally. More than 150 trucks lined up and down Lakeside Drive in the Town of Ontario to purchase rock salt earlier in the week. Several municipalities are also dealing with shortages and delivery delays from American Rock Salt.

"There is no limitation on any municipality being able to go to another source, we are helping that happen," Hochul answered. "I also want to say, to help alleviate the stress on municipalities and businesses, we are suspending, as of this moment, the requirement that there be certain hours of service, or limited hours on the road for truck drivers, for them to have longer hours, to continue their deliveries, to make sure our municipalities, in particular, have what they need to make people safe."

I am not quite sure why suspending hours of service limitations for all drivers is necessary? Shouldn't it just be for drivers hauling salt? The never ending swarm of flip flop wearing, meth head, non English speaking, Somalian truck drivers is going to love this. Banging back and forth to the port (not hauling salt) as many times in a day as the meth will allow will be quite the windfall to buy more meth.

The hours of service suspension is just for salt haulers.
States can suspend h.o.s rules for all sorts of reasons , a very common reason is if there is a prolonged cold snap, they allow home heating delivery drivers to exceed h.o.s. rules.

A very good point.
When we bought the 2014 Dart for my wife we were unaware at the time that the tires it came with where three season tires, and winter wasn't one of those seasons.

Of course, even with a dedicated set of actual snow tires the damned thing still sucked to drive in the snow. It was, quite literally, the worst vehicle I've ever driven in winter, and this includes a 2wd pickup truck and a single-rear-axle yard switcher at a shipping company. Hell, even my old 1979 Ford Fiesta was better in winter!

I don't think it's all that different. Isn't there a mine here in NY they can get the salt from?


I'd like to see the salt and salt/brine mixtures reduced or eliminated. I'm already going to spend a fortune if I want to rebuild my '99 Wrangler. The floorboards and body mounts are collapsing and we've already had to patch the frame in four places (almost lost the rear axle at one point).
