Law enforcement grants announced for video interrogation equipment
ALBANY – Four Hudson Valley law enforcement agencies will receive state funds to purchase or upgrade recording equipment to conduct video interrogations. The funding will help the agencies comply with a forthcoming law requiring law enforcement to video record interrogations for most serious crimes.
The Clarkstown Town Police Department will receive $12,775; the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will receive $9,732; Poughkeepsie City Police will receive $6,963; and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office will receive $19,301.
The state law takes effect on April 1. A failure to record interrogations in applicable cases could result in a court determining that a confession is inadmissible as evidence. The rule applies only to custodial interrogations at police stations, correctional facilities, prosecutors’ offices, and similar holding areas.
