Just signed up wanted to introduce myself my names Mike.

I signed up because I wanted to go somewhere to vent about the handgun license process here in NYC so I thought I'd cry on your shoulders.

So I was approved for my handgun license according to the NYPD on Jan 8th 2016. Your license is good for 3 years.

2 days ago I get a notice that it's time to renew a whole year early.

I call NYPD and I am told the following.

You were approved on December 22nd 2015.

I tell NYPD my acceptance letter says Jan 8th and my license was issued Jan 12.

They said they don't care I have 3 years from the date it was approved which was 12/22/2015.

I tell them, but it hasn't been 3 years, it's been 2 years 1 month.

They said no, it's 2018 now it's 3 years after 2015.

I said but I was approved according to you December 22nd. How is that 3 years

They said I must not know math and hung up.

They apparently go by the year issued and not by the month. Total BS

Welcome, I believe a pistol license issued by NYPD expires on the third year on your Birthday. They don't care if it actually has been 3 years or 2 years and xxx number of months.

Welcome to the forum. I have a special disdain for the pp process in this state. I suggest you read the handbook about your nyc permit just to be sure. For someone to speak to you like that is unacceptable, but unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.

The permitting scheme is not only unconstitutional as its an infringement, but its discriminatory. It discriminates against the less fortunate who cant afford the expensive permitting process. And in nyc who is the less fortunate? Single mothers, and these are the people who often need to defend themselves the most.

Sounds fair........for NYC

Its still amazing too me how different laws are throughout the same state.
In my county, if your not prohibited by law, you get an unrestricted carry permit, period.
There are no premises permits, no hunting permits, no target permits, just unrestricted.
Our local judges and sheriffs are strongy against the NYS laws.

The law says a NYC pistol license is valid for 3 years, you need to stand up to them, all the way to the director of the licensing division if you have to. It's pretty ironic for that moron you spoke with to say you don't know math, and they believe 2 years and 1 month is the same as 3 years.

This abuse is nothing new from NYPD Licensing Division.
