This is kinda interesting. Its $5.41 plastic insert that fits into your ball cap ( and others) and can provide a little bit of discrete head protection . Not a hard hat by any means, but if you're at a local BLM riot and a someone is concerned about your hydration level and tosses you a frozen water bottle, it may help prevent major concussion.

If nothing else, it gives shape to your ball cap. Available on Amazon. This one is under the " Skullerz " brand. There are others as well.

I am not a hat guy. If I do wear one, I dislike the floppy, look of them. I prefer the squared off trucker style that we were allowed to wear with our Air Force uniforms ( Each unit had ones with the squadron logos).

Bump caps. Certainly not a helmet or hard hat but for minor things, it may provide a level of protection. Possibly, like you said, the frozen water bottle, possibly other objects. I would think more so in a situation where objects are being thrown randomly. Not so much in a targeted attack.

We give these to everyone at work as part of their PPE equipment.

Is it just a plastic shell , id like to see a small amount of foam in it just a quarter inch may be better than nothing. I wear flat caps which that won't fit under and brimmed hats which could fit a bit more than that under them. Good idea though.

My son got hit in his shin/side of calf couple weeks ago with hockey puck. He was wearing shin guard thin plastic shell with about 1" - 1-1/2" of foam. He was complaining it hurt I was like huh, toughen up cupcake! Was really surprised when he showed me the size of the welt and bruise it left. I'm sure the shin guard prevented his leg from being shattered. Swelling was roughly about size of an egg even through all that foam. Not sure how much the plastic alone would help with severe blow but it's got to be better than nothing.

They are meant to be worn as protection in a confined work space. They protect you from bumping your head against things accidentally causing cuts or minor blunt trauma. I don't think they would give you a lot of protection from a hit to the head from a bat, pipe or brick that was swung or thrown at you. They wouldn't protect your head from falling off a bicycle for instance. They don't offer the same protection as a helmet and are not meant to be used as one. That said, I suppose it's better than nothing.

What about us follicle challenged guys? Not all of us have great hair like @cgrutt. Plastic looks pretty uncomfortable. Talk about an aggrieved population that needs special treatment! No padding, no peace!

I had shin guards split from a hard soccer kick. I liked the harder and potentially more brittle material because it spread the force on a wider area and even split in the middle will stay together due to the foam.
If I didnt had that I would have broken something at least 2 times.
Today carbon fiber is the way to go imo.

Thanks for the link to homedepot. I ordered one with foam and one without foam from HD with free shipping to my house, which is a bargain. They were less than $3 to about $8 each. I'll use these inserts when in my attic to avoid having a close encounter of the wrong kind with the tip of roofing nail .
