As a diabetic, there's not a whole lot of "traditional" stuff I can stockpile like rice or beans, as both are bad for my blood sugar. I keep a good amount of nuts in the house because, if you food seal them, they will last a long time and are calorically dense. Been thinking of keeping some vacuum sealed beef jerky as well, and canned vegetables I have a small amount of. Might freeze some apples just for long term fruit storage, and I keep a good amount of boneless skinless chicken thighs in the freezer cause it's cheap protein.
I'm not on insulin or any meds, and keeping it that way would be important long term if there shortages of food and medicine or something like that.
While I personally don't think it will be that bad out in our areas (non-NYC / LI), being able to be self sustaining for a few months at least is not a bad idea.
Anything non-food and non-hazardous, I generally throw in my storage unit. Got a ton of space in there and some shelves -- thing is pretty massive, 30x20. Surprisingly, still cheaper than the old storage place I was using which clocked in at more money for half the space. I should maybe consider re-pinning the locks with some serrated pins to make it more of a pain for anyone trying to get in.

It's hard to imagine how a shutdown of that magnitude would be to anyone's benefit.

From what little I have read about “going dark” after the election, MSM will broadcast sporadically, rightly or wrongly, that Donald Tump has lost the election, but is refusing to acknowledge his loss and refuses to leave office. President Trump will use the Emergency Broadcast System to announce that the results of the election from many states are fraudulent so that neither the House, nor the Senate can function and therefore a National Emergency exists.

You are witnessing one of the effects of capitalism. The better run businesses win. Just in time stocking is cost efficient, but has little elasticity to meet demand surges. Not saying that this is good or bad, just pointing out what it is.
On my side I build that reality into my own stocking of goods. Buying in bulk is typically cheaper anyways.
