Absolutely fucking useless.
PURPOSE:
To inform policymakers and the public of the origin of guns used to commit crimes.
Not to toughen arrest policy, bail requirements, abolish leniency, or anything else which would potentially get the bangers off the street. No - just another way to target the guns themselves as "the crime." Morons.

This is about giving the pro gun control politicians more statistics to support their agenda. Any gun that cannot have it's origin determined becomes a "ghost gun". Any gun that has it's serial numbers removed, any gun that never had a serial number, any home made gun, and anything else that cannot be traced becomes a "ghost gun". The numbers of "ghost guns" used in crimes will quickly rise, thus "proving" what a menace they are and that there must be more laws to control them.

Great another tool to point out why we need more restrictive laws to take away our guns at one of the highest crime times in our history. Maybe when the crimes drop we will look good??

Uniform Crime Reporting already does this so let's make a redundant NY Dept to do the same thing except we want to know where the gun came from. I can see Police Reports being reprinted now. (It doesn't matter that Hochuls cousin is the printer) They will look something like this:

A) Legally Owned
B) Borrowed from Legal Owner
C) Borrowed from illegal owner
D) Obtained via Gunshow Loophole
E) Obtained at Gunshow
F) Obtained via Internet Sale

Bloomberg convinced the NY Dems that the reason NY has gun crime is because other states don't have the same laws as NY and if New Yorkers believe that they are special and are entitled to live without risk and fear, other states must be forced to abandon their civil rights so we can don our adult diapers and watch the ball drop in Times Square without any risk or fear.
