Hopefully I'll be getting my permit before the end of next month in time for the Gun Show at the Dome Arena. I have a couple of questions for anybody out there: First is there any specific gun dealers anyone knows of that frequent gun shows but because of their bad business practices I should stay away from? Second, I'm thinking of a 9MM as my first purchase. I have no idea what a reasonable price would be. Could someone give me a ball park figure of an honest price? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Check online pricing at budsgunshop , grabagun or other online retailers.
They will be your least expensive ones. Local dealers are generally more money.
How much more? Depends. For instance a Ruger SR9 is $310 @ Buds and $449 at Gander Outdoors and Runnings here in Syracuse.
A Hi-Point 9mm is $189ish @ Gander. About the same as online.

The gun show may not have the best price. Do your research.
Do a search on this site for comments of previous shows at the Dome.

What style are you considering? Conceal carry , range use, SHTF?
Budget?

There are many things to consider prior to your purchase.

Go to the gun show, by all means. Test drive as much as you can. Buy nothing until you know what you want (and also- what you *don't* want).

Once you narrow it down, find someplace you can actually shoot them before you buy (if you can).

There is a lot to think about as noted above. What's this gun going to be used for? What's your preference as far as striker-fired vs hammer, double action only vs double/single, single only? Polymer? Metal?

I'd do research (including asking questions here!) And then the gun show to know how the guns you're interested actually feel in your hands.

My three cents.

I agree with those that recommend trying before buying. Before I got my permit I was going to purchase a beretta 92fs pistol for a couple of reasons. Then by chance I happened to visit a relative in Texas and went to a range there. I tried a number of pistols and found the beretta was a bit too big for my hands. Ultimately I settled on the glock 19 and that was my first purchase. YMMV.

Being genetically in New Yorkistan buying a handgun at a gun show would be nice one of the last places I would buy one from unless you had a coupon to take it right home with you.

If not you might be taking a long road trip to their gun shop where ever it may be to pick.it up after all of your paper work is done.

Monroe Cnty Clerk is usually there to do the paperwork so you can take it home right then. Well that is if you live in Monroe Cnty

Take a drive south to Pennsylvania some morning to a gun shop, look, fondle, have some lunch, go to another, look, fondle, ask questions. Take your time. Drive home, think, assess, plan.
It's all about hand fit and features. Kinda tough to buy a bad brand nowadays, unless you spend under $250 new. S&W, Ruger, Glock, Springfield Armory, walther, Sigs, are all good. Not so much with High Points, Lorcin, etc.

go to PA and shoot some guns, its a free state so you pay your money and shoot.
No Poll Tax you damn second class citizen!

or get your permit and shoot your friends guns, its cheaper!

First thing to do is forget what your buddies say you should get. What's great for them may feel awful to you. Put your hands on as many of them as you can so you know what feels good to you. As far as price, yea you can get a cheap gun like a High Point if you like the feel of a brick in your hand but I'd suggest buying the one that feels good to you no matter price. Save up longer if you have to. A 22 is a great choice for a first gun because you can afford to shoot it a lot and get the feel for shooting handguns. I know many people who go out and buy large caliber guns only to be disappointed that they can't seem to shoot them well. Becoming proficient with a handgun requires range time and a 22 is perfect for that.
