Gun safe dial suddenly got harder to turn

S&G mechanical combination dial normally spins very easily. All of a sudden it became hard to turn. Looks like something is dragging on the spin/opening handle. Anybody ever have this happen before and know how to correct? Seems like something came loose. Just happened a few minutes ago was working fine earlier this afternoon. Assuming the mechanical stuff will be exposed if I take back carpet/rails off door but there are a lot of snap caps and don't feel like dealing with this tonight.

As far as I know mechanical dials require periodic maintenance and/or servicing. Consult your manufacturer.

Pull the lock off and see what looks funny. Pretty straight forward when you see it.

Don't lock the safe till you figure it out!

Might just be a mounting screw coming loose or something silly like that.

Thought about that too late lol. Think something came loose that connects to the opening handle I can see it moving slightly when turning dial. Hopefully its accessible when i pull back of door off and I can figure it out.

Back in the early 2000's, I was the Lab Manager and did the QC work for the company that made the zinc alloy for S&G's castings. If it was a Monday or Friday, something might have slipped through. Oopsie!!

I just read that if you put your car keys inside the safe and close it and spin the dial 3 times it will fix it.

This happens on my safe of the handle isn’t closed all the way. It drags and gets tough to spin. Usually if I tap the handle and make sure it’s closed it works just fine. Good luck.

Yeah have a feeling it has something to do with handle there are a lot of moving pieces something probably worked itself loose. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Check that there’s nothing impeding one of the locking bars - if they are blocked at all, the mechanism gets jammed somehow. I had it happen when one of the dessicant packs slid under one of the lower bars and gave it just enough resistance that the dial wouldn’t work.

Well seems to be working fine today handle was probably not opened/closed fully yesterday or one of the locking bolts got hung up...

Probably wouldn't hurt to spray some dry-lube in there to prevent anything from binding in the short term while you have the back panel open. I've been using the same remington shit I use on my mag springs in the keyways and it seems to work well without attracting dirt.

Didn't have to open back up its working fine today must not have had bolt open/closed fully.

Wasn't really thrilled about prospect of troubleshooting this it has 20 bolts and I'm sure many other parts under the back panel...



They seem to all be clean and lightly greased just going to chalk it up to a fluke. First time ever had issue with it in the 13 years that I've owned it.

And that’s why every morning I wrap it around my leg and tuck it into my sock.

If your opening handle is turned the opposite way other than open, mine puts pressure on the dial.
