Gun Safes,- and their prices lately??? WTH

So, recently I was looking into moving a gun safe from the garage up into the house. Called a few movers. Several wouldn’t move it at all up a set of stairs. Only one would, and they wanted about twice what I paid for the safe just to move it. I could have bought 2 new ones for what they wanted to move it. WTH?

So I started looking at maybe selling it, and buying two smaller ones that I could move myself with a dolly and 1 person helping. Looked all over, and it seems like safe prices are going through the roof! I found an 18 gun safe at Cabela’s that fit the bill for under $500, but it was out of stock, and then discontinued. Now, everywhere I look, that same size safe is selling in the $900-$1,000 range! What is up with that?

As an aside, I had to laugh at this brand I saw on Amazon. “Sweetwater”,…and it is NOT at all water resistant! Cabela’s now offers an 18 gun Liberty safe for $899 on sale. And Academy Sports has one listed on Clearance for $719,- but of course it is out of stock already…

Anybody else seeing safe prices going up?

My neighbor has access to a self climbing dolly. The safe I am looking at selling rather than moving from the garage weighs an estimated 700 lbs, empty, and with door off.

I wonder if the dolly could even handle that? So, looking into two smaller ones instead.

Different dollys may have different load ratings.

I've got a friend who built a small safe room in his basement. He raised the floor a foot and used block and a 1 hour steel fire door. The ceiling he used 1/2" plate steel. The inside and outside he doubled up 1/2" fire rock, installed some lighting, a couple outlets, and it looks sweet.

It cost him like $3 grand for it. Which is about the price of a larger Liberty safe. But it's 5x the size.

He's thinking about changing out the door to a vault door though, but maybe in a few years.
