gunless permit valid?

I should know the answer to this question, but I admit I cannot find an answer to it after looking around.

If a PP holder drops a pistol from the PP and it is the only one listed, is the PP still in effect/valid? Assume the PP holder wants to sell the only pistol which is listed on the back, but does not want to replace it with another pistol for another 3-4 months, leaving a permit with no guns listed. Will the PP be revoked because no pistols are listed or will it be amended to show no pistols listed (blank) on the newly amended card?

Just wondering. I was asked this question by a customer and was unable to give a definite answer. Any one out there have comments about this? Yes I know I can just call DCSO and ask, but I usually cannot reach the Detective and do not trust a clerk's advice. I did try to call yesterday. No luck. Thanks in advance.

Hmm, that is a good question. I know you can't get one here without purchasing a pistol, but no idea about removing one, leaving you with zero.

I don't see why not though. Question for the judge.

I had my permit with zero guns on it for a good 5 or 6 years for awhile in the 2000s. But my County doesn't have a law that you need a gun on the permit, not to initially get it or during the time having it..although, never getting in trouble or questioned about it I really don't know the exact answer. I just know from my experience of having several in the 90s, selling them in the 2000s and getting more again after that, I just bought and went through the normal hoops with my same permit that had none for those years.

I wouldn't think so. Back when I first became interested in getting my permit, I asked the then clerk about having to have a pistol purchased and listed on my application and she said "No, in fact many people will get their permits just so they can shoot a friend's or a spouse's handgun. I didn't need to have one purchased and on my application when I applied.

My brother has had one for many year, 5 or so. His is through Madison county. He is the typical FUDD and got the permit because I was. No I have it carry and fun shoot all the time he's convinced it's a novelty and doesn't care to buy one of his own. It's too bad he has the perfect profession to carry all the time.

Putnam. My permit was just amended to back to just the empty lines on the back of it, so yea, a new card was printed and gave back to me with blank back. I had that in my wallet for all the years I didn't have any handguns, because there's no expiration in Putnam. Then when I started buying again I just went through the normal purchase/amendment process.

Orange County just switched to issuing permits without buying a gun first.

Here in Dutchess County, they won't allow you to list any guns when first applying for a permit. Westchester is just the opposite.If granted, the permit is valid until revoked.

Agreed, a gunless permit is like an empty doghouse, or close to it

To address the op's question: I don't know, but I strongly suspect it depends upon the county. The whole system is screwed up anyway.

I think once Monroe County had a status that said you needed to have a gun that could be put on a permit .before they gave you your permit. . It went a little like you had to purchase a firearm but could not take possession until the permit came. According to one dealer that became a bit crazy as sometimes the same handgun was on several permits .. One person would put a down payment on it just to get their permit and never returned back so it was sold again. .... some beat up Saturday night special on sale for a $100

They wont know for 2-3 years when the p12 paperwork finally catches up......

The law says you need a permit to POSSES a handgun.......it says nothing about having a permit and NOT possesing.

(Just for fun i will point out that people with no permits CAN handle a pistol......but not "posses". The sp know this as well. They just dont want "you" to know it)

Good post, but I feel your last sentence may stir some controversy here.......(people with no permit can handle a pistol)

OK, so I was in contact with a person of authority at DCSO, telling me that when amending a PP to drop the only pistol listed will result in a new blank PP being issued. SOLVED! No gun is required to be on PP for it to be valid and in force. At least in Dutchess county NY.

Thought so. You don't need a car to have a driver's license, but you need a license to drive a car.
