Gunsmiths in the Oswego/Syracuse area?

Does anyone know a good gunsmith in the Oswego/Syracuse area? Have an Ishapore .410 conversion that I need to have the chambering checked and possibly reamed out to use modern .410 shells. I have tried to research how to tell if it has been converted (many imports have been) but there is very little info to be found. If anyone knows about this please enlighten me!

Van tassels gunsmithing in Evans Mills they are a little farther away for you. People have come farther than that for his work though.

I've done business with these guys twice...not happy, I'm done. Yes, they were personable, timely, no complaint price wise, but there were problems. Your mileage may vary. Just make sure they understand your expectations.

I had a very bad experience with these guys! Long story short I refuse to spend any money with them, even though I lived a few miles from them. I agree with muttcat they are personable people but their work is awful.

Well that’s sucks to hear. I haven’t used them in years but everything that I asked to have done was completed to my satisfaction. Sounds like things have changed for the worse there.

I’ve met Larry several times and have been to his shop. He makes custom high grad reproduction firearms and is Damn good at it. I doubt that you will find better any where in the country.
I know that he started out doing smithing work on the side when he was just starting out but that was more than 35 years ago. I haven’t talked to him in a few years now. I didn’t know that he was still doing smith work.

just my thinking .. have you even tried just testing a modern shell in it .. drop one in and see if it fits .. chamber closes ect ..

I tried chambering both 2 1/2" and 3" shells in it. they both slide in easily up to the brass and then are sort of a tight fit. The bolt does close on both and pulls and extracts them (unfired) In checking online people on other boards have said that if it hasn't been reamed out that you won't be able to chamber a 2 1/2 or 3" shell. Originally made to chamber a proprietary 2"(?) brass case based off of an un-necked down .303. Anyone know any more about these? Was thinking of test firing it remotely but would hate to blow it up.

you need to fit a FIRED shell. Put a plug of some sort (anything, wood, rolled up duct tape) into the shell to hold the now unfolded shell fully open. If it fits all the way in, the chamber is long enough and you are good. If it doesn't fit, if you were to fire a live shell the now folded part would unfold into the forcing cone and that would not be so good...

Just how I would check...
