My nervousness came from digging the indoor backstop for lead. As careful as I am there is still a lead dust factor. After that with standard safety precautions there is very little chance of harmful lead exposure.
Had a blood lead level test done.... and got a call from the NYS department of health

Which is odd because they're also ventilated.

I ordered some of the D-lead wipes for the range bag and soap for the house. They say it seems to work. How were your levels?

I don't reload. I do help work the shoots though - taping targets after they're scored, etc, so I am in the range after the shooter shoots. I think it's from breathing what's floating around in the air (lead from primer explosion and from whatever got vaporized from the back of the bullet). I thought I was washing up okay, but it's after the shoot with regular soap, so I am going to start using the DeLead wipes.

My question exactly.
Test results above the normal automatically get reported to the state or the CDC I can't remember which. LMS you have a choice not to tell them anything but either the lab or the doctor is legally required to report and elevated result. My last one was 5 or 7 I can't remember now. I'm a month out from my next one. I'm still melting down the range scrap I collected and haven't taken it to the next level yet.

It's most likely from breathing the dust. I shot a winter league in some old clubs (50's and 60's). The guys were wearing respirators during practice. I didn't finish the season. Old indoor ranges with no ventilation are not a good combination. I only shoot outside now.

I worked in a laboratory before I got married where we used a lot of lead- lead foil, powdered lead oxide - then burnt off the lead in furnaces. At the time, I had my blood lead levels tested and it was high. I was able to get it down by being very careful to limit my exposure.
Years later, my roommates filled me in on how much of an asshole I had become during that time. I only blame part of that on my charming personality. I'm sure the lead had a lot to do with it.

from my understanding with lead .. i could be wrong .. but crap i have to die of something ... lead effect young kids development and there brain..
like eating lead paint chips .. damn they were yummy too .. all different colors and flavors ..
is there actual data on old adults with lead poisoning ... from what i hear with a few simple things it clears from us and really no long term
effects .. so whats the deal ?? ..

must have lead to my addiction of shooting and now reloading .. grrrrr LOL .

Good point. That level in an adult is not bad, but its important to know why his levels are elevated, especially if he has children. Elevated levels are REALLY bad for kids.have a three year old answer any questions as you, that should fuck'em up

Yep. Kids are adults now and no lead pipes in the house or lead paint, so if mine trends downward I doubt I'll suggest they get tested.
Right now I have convinced myself its a combination of coming in contact with the residual lead dust on the indoor range attaching itself to things I touch, being in the thick of it to help work the shoot and breathing what's suspended in the air, and not paying enough attention to clean hands and what I touch with them.
Good thing there's a ton of scheduled outdoor shoots (just about one every weekend) in spring summer and fall. I'll still shoot indoors in the winter, just a bit less frequently.
I appreciate all the good dialogue from everyone on this thread.
