Hanging steel targets

Carriage bolt head sheared off after 1 shot (not a direct hit). Are there any classes/types of bolts that are better suited for hanging steel targets?

I’m considering those hook type hangers available in amazon. Federal SMK 308 at 200yards, fyi.

Be very careful with that. Ricochets are more common and unpredictable then people care to believe. I seen things happen an people get seriously injured. Shoot paper.

The 'Grade 8' bolts are usually tougher. Maybe try a regular bolt with a washer to help distribute the load better instead of the carriage bolt.

At my club, we use rubber/plastic hangers between the steel plate and the chain that helps eliminate some of the shock to the plate and hangers.

At 200 yards, you should have safety concerns adequately addressed.

i can say i was shot by a 45acp, because of steel!
50' steel knock down targets, came right back at me. made me bleed, but didn't go thru my jeans.

been hit a lot, but never on steel past 25 yards.
200 yards, you are good!

i believe they should be loose, mine are and they came that way.

Bullseye camera system are getting very popular. They will show your group with the last shot blinking. It's an investment, but people love them.

I agree with all of the above especially going to regular bolts instead of carriage bolts. Your carriage bolt failed at thin part of head.

At one club I belong to the big draw is shooting steel from 200 to 500 yards. The steel gets shot a lot and the only hangers they use are the ones that go over a heavy steel post and insert thru a center hole in target. They mainly use ipsc targets that shield hanger body. This set up takes loads of abuse unlike bolts and chain (and while bolts and fire hose another good option bolts are still week link). I quickly went to post and hanger set up on my own stuff. You can still use round targets with ears, even if the only have one ear left.
