Has anyone been to Calverton Shooting Range

Of the 2 big outdoor public ranges on long island for rifle shooting, Brookhaven is Nazi Germany and Calverton is like Knob Creek. There's a rifle line and a pistol line. At the pistol line, the people there call their own cease fires to change targets and an employee calls them at the rifle line. You can shoot standing, sitting, prone, whatever works for you. Because of this lax atmosphere, expect to get muzzled a few times and random other people shooting at your target. This is in comparison to Brookhaven where every motion you make will probably get you yelled at. Shooting at Brookhaven is sitting at a bench only except if you're in the pistol area. I've heard many stories from people shooting at calverton for decades that it used to be even more lax. People would put all sorts of objects at the other end of the range but now it's restricted to paper. Some people get away with more but it's rare and doesn't last long. The benefit of Brookhaven is that they also have a shotgun trap range, so there's a bit more variety to be had. Lastly, if you're into shotgun trap/sporting clays, check out the range in Yaphank. It's shotgun only and has organized trap/clays in a great setup. It's perfect for bringing a bunch of friends and going around the clays back woods area. Golf carts are available. Lastly, Calverton is crazy busy on weekends. People interested in the shooting sports has exploded in the years of Obama and with only a couple public ranges on Long Island, they're all fighting for the same spots. A spot at Calverton is technically good for the day, so spots don't open up often. At Brookhaven I think a spot is only good for an hour or 2 so there's reasonable turnover.

great info thanks. A friend told me we would have to get to Calverton early and line up for when the gate open. I like that the spot is yours for the day though. Calverton does offer trap shooting, if you throw your own. I don't mind though as I have a thrower and a box of clays that have been sitting around. Wouldn't mind getting them used up. I'm looking forward to a day of shooting pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Don't usually have time to do all 3.
