Headed to Adirondacks Tent Camping and Ice Fishing

Headed up to the Adirondacks Thursday for 3 nights. No electric or water. I plan on testing renewable electric. Using LED tent lighting, 12 volt projector, battery powered speakers and sound system. Everything run off a 12v battery with a 3 panel solar array for charging during the day.

A buddy and I have a 10x12 canvas tent and are pretty accustomed to cold weather camping. Last years trip had temperatures about 20 degrees on average.

Hot tent camping?

I use to take the boy scouts tent camping this time of year and we would hope for temperatures below 10°f so the snow didn't melt. We could keep the kids warm with straw under the tents and a wool blanket over their sleeping bags but if they got wet it was a game changer.

I've done it many times, but it's best with a woodstove in the tent. We could sit in there in a t-shirt. The weather is suppose to be decent on Thursday - Saturday anyways, not too cold. We got dumped on yesterday, much more snow than they forecasted, but at least it's the light fluffy type.

I still have an old Moss Deltoid tent that I used for winter camping when I was younger. I told my kids I'd prep them to do it and they just laughed. They're pretty smart and able to adapt to most any situation, but frankly, they've spent too many years with their mother!

Lol, i was thinking along those lines too! Haha. They got the whole home theater set up with lightning and sound system..ahhh "camping" how I miss the days..loke, camping, with zero sounds but nature and only a fire and flashlight for light. I really do miss those days too lol.

The last time I went cold weather camping it wasn't supposed too be to cold. Went up to Monguap Pond in Debruce back when it stayed open through deer season. It was in the 50's when we arrived and set up camp the weather report was for overnight flurries and a low of 38. I woke up at 4:30 Am to icicles in the tent and 8 inches of snow outside with a temp of about 20F. I couldn't get that fire going fast enough (Thank GOD for road flairs) The moral of that story was never trust the weatherman especially in the mountains....Enjoy!!

We are bringing 2 propane heaters so the tent should be warmer than not. As to room service, my buddy always jokes, that's why he brings me along. I am pretty good at cooking and we usually eat well. This time out I am planning on veal scallopini one night and a shrimp dish on another.

Anyone interested in joining us for a day of fishing, we will be camped on the south shore up the west side of Indian Lake from Thursday night through Sunday morning. We will most likely be the only fools camping so we should be easy to find.

Some years ago I did a fair amount of cold weather camping. Proper planning and preparation make it more enjoyable than one might think. Of course good equipment adds favoroubly to the equation.
If someone made a small easily assembled and transported Yurt I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Last time i did something like this was dec 31 overnight in the daks.

Show shoed in. Set up. Packed out. I used everything i brought. I needed nothing else (1st time i forgot nothing).

Went below 0 F that night.

We don't have a yurt but we have one of these Guide Gear Canvas Wall Tent, 10' x 12' - 175423, Outfitter & Canvas Tents at Sportsman's Guide

Good gear for the conditions is a must. I 10 degree mummy bag which I line with a fleece bag and put inside an outer shell. I have slept in 17 below with it. At that temp, it was still a little on the chilly side but workable. With the propane heaters in the tent it will be comfortable. We bring 2 because two is one and one is none. The heaters are a comfort and we plan our gear around not having heaters.

OK, to the point. His son took over his business. I believe one of the products is outfitter style tents.
I believe the website is rdbussard.com. Never used one but Probably would be good for a winter base camp.
Place in Oregon or maybe Washington makes Yurts. However,they are pretty large. Very well done though and very comfortable in all climates. Some campgrounds out there have them to rent. Sort of like how some KOA campgrounds rent cabins. I fell in love with those Yurts.

Back in the 80's me and a buddy spent two nights at the leanto at Middle Settlement Lake. The daytime highs for the trip were -16F and nighttime lowest was -32F. So cold the 10th Mountain Division canceled outdoor activities! Was the first time I can remember hearing the term "Siberian Express". Also came to appreciate the saying: An Adirondack leanto can be as cold as a tomb. Be safe.

Isn't that something!!! I have become good friends with the father. We keep in touch and visit When our wandering paths come close.
I have never actually seen one of the tents. Give me a report sometime.They actually started out making commercial canvas laundry bags like you may see in hospitals.

Last time we used it, it rained and sleeted a bit. Tent stayed dry. Zippers are heavy duty and the seams are well sown. It has a separate zipper flap to keep any draft out. Since you use steal poles, it barely moves in a 20 mph wind. There is a chimney hole if you want to put a small wood stove in it, but at this size, I would be a little concerned about scorching the tent wall. The flap over the hole is well fastened and did not leak at all. 12 x 10 gave us 1/2 the tent for sleeping and the other half for a couple chairs, small table and gas stove. It went down to 17 degrees and we ran 2 Mr. Buddy heaters and had the temp up to 65. It held the heat well. It is heavy and bulky. Along with the poles, this is NOT a portable tent. It has windows on 3 sides with heavy screen and zipper up flaps on the inside to seal up the screens.

Thanks for the report. I know that the Dad is quite particular about things. Thought I remember him telling me that they use some kind of Silicone insert at the chimney hole to handle the heat.
I knew they were heavy duty. They seem to sell a lot to outfitters for things like elk hunting.

The NOAA local forecast is calling for -2 F Thursday night and 4 F on Friday night, that's for the north central Adirondacks. That's typical for this time of year up here, in fact temperatures have been warmer than normal this winter.

As promised, a couple pics from this past weekend. It was around 0 degrees the first night and in the 20's the 2nd and 3rd nights. We got 14" of new snow the last night/morning of the trip. When we arrived there was approximately 2 feet of snow on the ground. We had to dig down to dirt prior to pitching the tent. Since there was no floor in the tent and we were using propane heaters, we feared waking up in a puddle of water. All in all, it was a good trip. We stayed warm, ate well and had a great time in the snow. It would have been nice to have caught a few fish after 2 days on the ice but all in all, it was a fun test of skill.
