Hello from Oneida County

Hello! I'm so blessed to have stumbled across this forum while looking up information on 2a as well as searching on acquiring a pistol permit. I'm the wife of a Gulf War Veteran (Military Police), the mother to 4 adult children and the grandma to 6 gorgeous grandchildren. I have so many questions so hopefully, while looking through this forum, I'll find a lot of my answers! I take my permit class, with my husband and 4 friends on Feb 29th and really looking forward to it. I'm unsure if this initial question was ever asked so thought I might pop it here. My apologies if it's the wrong spot to do so. I know they can deny a permit for whatever reason. I wonder if one of those reasons could be because someone has GAD? (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and is that something that should be disclosed on a permit application? (asking for one of my 4 friends) Thanks and I really look forward to learning as much as possible from you all!

Thanks everyone Took a friend of mine about 8 months for his permit to come through. I'm sure mine will be approved sooner than the husband's considering he's a veteran....from what I hear, vets take longer to process. Really REALLY looking fwd to learning as much as I can along the way so any advice, is more than welcomed and know I'm extremely grateful...oh and I like beer lol

This forum is a great resource, but I'd also consider the Oneida-Herkimer Chapter of SCOPE (Shooters Committee On Political Education) for face to face local advice. They normally meet on the second Monday of the month at American Legion Post 229 on Herkimer Road. For FEBRUARY ONLY, the meeting will be held on the THIRD MONDAY, due to scheduled maintenance on the building. You don't need to be a member to attend.

If one of your references has GAD that won't (or shouldn't) affect you; the application is for YOU. If the person applying has/had GAD, it might be reportable during the application. Supposedly the majority of the 6+ month wait for pistol permit applications is the Mental Health check.

Not sure how it works in Oneida, but from what I've heard here in Livingston the time to get your permit is mostly dependent on how busy the deputies are.

Basically the background check work is the bottom of the totem pole for priority so it only gets worked when everything else is caught up.

That said, my cousin's wife got hers in 5 weeks here. Mine took a bit longer, but nothing like the poor downstaters.

Every application from every county is different. Mine just asked if I was ever confined to a mental health facility. So my answer would be no and I wouldn’t list it.

Welcome! There are lots of very informed members here on a plethora of subjects. As far as disclosing GAD on your permit application I would only do so if it applies to yourself if not I wouldn’t worry. Good luck with your permit!

Excellent job jumping through the hoops to get your pistol license. It's a pain, but well worth it.

The going timeline in Erie county is anywhere from maybe 8-14 months dependent on which town you live in and how 2a friendly the local department is.

I know from going through my application process they did ask a mental health question or 2 but I don't recall exactly what it was asking.

I do remember the advice I constantly received was to be honest And to answer the questions directly. Don't give more information than they are asking for but be totally honest because they will look and investigate and if you lie it will be a major red flag to overcome whereas if there is something in your history they don't like you still may have the opportunity to discuss it during the interview process.

Just my .02 cents your mileage may vary.

But please keep us updated on your progress I think it will be much appreciated by other people with similar experiences and questions.

I just signed off as a character reference for a girl last week so it's great to see so many women going through the process.

Good morning I just took the safety class yesterday and I was really surprised to see so many women there. The instructor said he's seeing more and more women taking the class and that he did one with @50 people all women except one gentleman. My favorite part was when he asked why...why we wanted our cc permit. Lots of "personal protection", "target shooting", "hunting" and then there was little ole me "because it's my constitutional right to do so and I want it before this God forsaken state tells me I can't" and he said "and YOU have my utmost respect" Good day for sure and learned lots. I asked him, privately, about the anxiety thing and he said to be honest but it seems more people have anxiety than people that don't anymore and since you have it under control, it would be a positive compared to those NOT treating it so I shouldn't be concerned. I doesn't mean they won't sign off on it, no guarantees, but he doesn't think it will be a problem. We'll see...step one completed...Monday, application office!

Sooooo working on this book, aka, application This is really going to be a dumb question but Hair Color? Really? I'm a chick...my hair color in the last year has been 1 of MANY colors, including blue lol So I'm back to colors found in nature now, auburn but my natural color is blah brown. Do I put auburn or brown? Is an "alias" different than "name change"? (ie maiden name, 1st married name) I've worked for the same company for the last 12 years, the first 3 or 4, we were independent contractors, the last 8, "temps" hired through a 3rd party employment agency who won't verify employment for anything...I have an email into the primary company's attorney on what to do there but FFS why does something so easy have to be so friggen difficult UGH lol

I wouldn't worry about hair color. Brown is just fine. An alias would be a different name you go by, don't use that it's not a name change.

I have a friend just filled his out in Erie county. It seems they changed things up quite a bit since Chris Jacobs left. On the plus side I hear that once your application is in the times are down drastically from what they were. I'm hearing 4-8 months.
