Help with cleaning stock..

Recently acquired a couple rifles. All seem to have the same marks on the wood. Any safe way to remove them?

First try would be ballistol or something similar.

Next try would be mineral spirits.

If that didn't work, 0000 steel wool or fine Scotch Brite with a bit of furniture paste wax.

If that doesn't work, it's in the wood, not on the wood

As @kev74 said smallest measures first. But I see that the varnish is already removed. Looks a chemical reaction happened on the wood. Was it possibly stored in a closet rubbing on wall board? On this example a refinish would make a fine rifle. Remember if you sand, less is more.

Be *VERY* careful applying CLP (regardless of brand) directly on the wood. Start with a clean, damp rag and light pressure. Get progressively more aggressive with other options, as needed, like sandpaper or chemicals. Less is more, for sure.

I use Renaissance Wax on stocks. Not often, but once in a while.

Linseed oil will self ignite, so put any rags, brushes, etc in metal containers, lay them out to dry on the ground.
Boiled linseed and bees wax makes a nice finish. Use your googlefue.

Remove stock, sand with fine sand paper. You may need to restain (some were painted during later dates). Then boiled Linseed oil rub

Belt Sander. (kind of like the nuke them from orbit!). Does look like some paint pickup from the pix. All good advice from everyone except my first comment!

It looks like some paint transferred from another surface. I'd use some mineral spirits first to see if it comes off. You can try lightly wet sanding with high grit if the mineral spirits doesn't work.

Anytime I've done any wood work for stocks, I usually just go 100%. I completely sand down, wet sand, restain, and reseal with BLO.

I do high grit/fine sanding in between every two layers of BLO application for at least 8 coats and let it set with minimum 12 hours between each coat. Lastly, I let it sit for 7 days to completely cure.
