Deplorable Me
.700 Nitro Express
Has anyone ever reloaded polymer coated bullets? They sound good in theory, are they as clean as they claim?
The polymer coating forms a molecular bond on the inference surface so the adhesion is quiet strong. Plus its softer that the normal jacket material allowing it to deform better when traveling down the barrel. They think that's part of the reason they seem to leave such a clean barrel.I always wondered about them.
It always seemed to me that the polymer would have a hard time transferring enough torque to the lead, it takes a hell of a lot of torque to accelerate something from 0 to 100,000 rpm in a millisecond.
But, I guess they work, or you would see jacket bits flying off like a sabot as it left the barrel.
The Hi Tek stuff worked better than powder coat for me.Have you tried casting and powder coating your own? I've done it and it's really easy with good results.
I'll probably purchase some precoated just to try them. The Hi Tec stuff comes as a powder. You mix a little bit of it with acetone and give the bullets a shake & bake. I made a couple of trays out of 1/4" wire mesh that fit in the toaster oven. After 2 coats, you can't see where the bullets were sitting on the mesh.
And all this time I thought that Hi tech was a spray on in a rattle can. Learn something new everyday! The Hi Tec stuff comes as a powder. That's why I linked these guys. 100% American made small business bullets and they are cheap. At 8 cents a piece these 124gr shoot great out of my 357 and 358 barrels.

I'm going to have to look into that when my cast bullets run out. I've only loaded plated bullets in .40 S&W and like them. It looks like Xtreme has .430 and .452 bullets for very little more than coated cast bullets.last time I was going to buy those I found xtreme, winchester, Hornady and speer TMJ bulk about the same cost and even cheaper than polymer or cast.
One can get lead, plated deals down to 8 to 9 cents per bullet but then for the same and in ocassions even better
one can get a proper fmj or tmj. Even at 10 cents is still a better option in terms of cleaningness and worry free shooting.
One just have to find the deals like the 2, 3 and 6k unit packages. not sure if they still sell them. also everything has changed with covid.
check xtreme fmjs I recalled them having 500 units cans for 10 to 11 cents and you get to keep a nice steel ammo can vs a cardboard box.
It is also a matter if you have a bore and mandrel that allows you to use 9mm (.356) bullets so you can tap into the great deals of
of the 2k and 2.5K 9mm units like hornady bulk boxes.
All my 357, and even 358 rifle barrels do great with those bulk bullets like the speer 147gr TMj and hornady HAP. 9mm speer can take the heat
of a 358 winchester rifle so we know is good for anything else given the bore is good for this.
It is a matter of finding them and doing the math.
Bulk is the way to do like professional shooters do so they dont go broke trainign and shooting in competitions.
I concluded that at the end of the day cast and/or polymer is not worthy and unless one is doing it themselves or for hobby of other reasons to do cowboy loads cleaner. Some ranges do not allow cast anymore and you don't want to be breathing those fumes anyway.
I think cast and poly will continue to play an important role in airguns but all that will eventually change due to pollution.
