HOAs have no control inside your home. They cannot enter without permission, let alone police what you have inside. It's highly illegal for them to do so. They're not owners of the inside property -- you're expressly the owner inside the walls. They can police the outside, not the inside.
Can't those rights be signed away in a HOA contract?

They don't have the ability to control the inside of the unit. Even if they do get to decree something, they can't enter without permission and without working out a scheduled date with a home owner who would have plenty of time in advance to know they'd be there...

When we bought out property out here the existence of an HOA was an instant deal breaker.
There was one nice 70 acre property we looked at, and while it wasn't in the HOA the houses across the street were. Even that counted heavily against that property for us.
